I'm excited to share that I'm joining Nebula.tv as a front-end developer starting in January. I'll still be writing articles, making YouTube videos, and publishing courses on the Lean Web Club. But I'll also be working as a dev on the streaming platform. Today, I wanted to share a bit more about the role, and why I'm making this move. Why Nebula? If you're not already familiar with Nebula, they're a streaming platform for indie creators. The business runs on a co-op model, where creators actually own and share the profit that Nebula brings in. As an anti-capitalist stuck in a capitalist system, that kind of business model is much more appealing to me than a lot of the alternatives out there. Nebula is also extremely focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion. They put a lot of attention on pronouns and pronouncing names properly. They're remote-first, and the team I'm working with is global and spread across multiple time-zones. They had one of the best interview processes I've ever gone through. The company's approach to employment is to treat people like adults and trust them to get their work done. The offer letter even says…
And as a sniff-test, I kept dropping political conversation topics to get a sense for who I'd be working with. They definitely passed! What about the Lean Web Club? There was a time when my education business was a full-time salary. That hasn't been the case for about two years (a trend I've heard from most of my developer education friends), and this was negatively impacting my ability to create quality content. When every change or update can affect whether or not you can afford your mortgage, it's hard to do your best creative work! This job at Nebula frees me up to work on a platform I feel strongly about, do work I believe, and have the creative space to publish developer education. The day after I accepted the job, I started making a ton of updates and improvements the platform, came up with a bunch of new course ideas, and feel a level of energy and creativity I haven't in months. Real-world experienceOne of the recurring requests I've gotten from folks recently is to create more content on building the lean web way under imperfect conditions: when you're using a stack you can't control that relies on libraries and tooling. This job is timely. Nebula is a React shop, so I'll have a whole bunch of real world, first-hand experience to share! Teaching when you're not actively working in the industry can sometimes detach you from what it's really like to work as a developer. You become a bit of an arm-chair philosopher, spouting advice without experience to ground it. I'm really looking forward to it! Nebula is seriously awesome! Some of my favorite YouTube creators are on Nebula (which is how I know about them in the first place), and after signing up, I discovered a bunch more folks that I really love. If you enjoy high-quality content, hate ads, and want to support indie creators, Nebula is a phenomenal bargain at just $60/year. And if you're interested in working there, they currently have an opening for a Social Media Manager. Cheers, Want to share this with others or read it later? View it in a browser. |
