 | The voice of the world in numbers | | | Jan. 13, 2026 | | | Welcome to Front Page, Gallup's indispensable intelligence distilled into five charts that give leaders the insights they need to make their most important decisions. | | | 1. Independents Still Growing | | | | The Data: Forty-five percent of U.S. adults identified as political independents in 2025, the highest annual average Gallup has recorded. The Trend: Independent identification has risen significantly over the past 15 years, registering 40% or higher in most years since 2011. In contrast, both Democratic and Republican identification fell to 27% in 2025, among the lowest levels in trends since 1988. Latest Data | | | 2. Political Party Identification With Leaners | | | | The Data: When taking independents' political leanings into account, 47% of U.S. adults identified as Democrats or leaned Democratic in 2025, compared with 42% as Republicans or Republican leaners, ending a three-year Republican advantage. The Trend: The current partisan balance mirrors patterns seen during Donald Trump's first term, when Democrats typically led by an average of five percentage points. The 2025 data also align with the broader long-term trend in which Democrats and Democratic leaners have usually outnumbered Republicans and Republican leaners. Latest Data | | | 3. Self-Reported Political Ideology | | | | The Data: In 2025, 35% of U.S. adults identified as conservative, compared with 28% as liberal and 33% as moderate — the narrowest gap between the right and left that Gallup has recorded. The Trend: Liberal identification has risen gradually over the past two decades, mostly offset by fewer Americans identifying as politically moderate. After some modest wobbling, the conservative share is similar to what it was in 1992, the first year Gallup asked Americans to describe their political views. Full Story | | | 4. Democrats' Liberal Ideology Up Further | | | | The Data: In 2025, 59% of Democrats identified as liberal, up four points from 2024 and more than twice the rate recorded in 1994 (25%). The Trend: Democrats' ideological center has shifted steadily leftward over the past three decades, largely accounting for the increase in liberal ID nationally. Among Democrats, liberals now outnumber moderates (32%) and conservatives (8%) by wide margins, with increases seen across most subgroups. Read Article | | | 5. Conservatism Dominant Among GOP | | | | The Data: In 2025, 77% of Republicans described their political views as conservative, unchanged from 2024 but up from around 60% in the mid-1990s. The Trend: Republicans' ideological identity has grown more uniformly conservative over time. Moderates now make up just 20% of the party, and liberals only 2%.
