I've heard a few people refer to these next few weeks as "May-hem"... and I think that's pretty accurate.
We have baseball games, track meets, band and choir concerts, teacher retirement parties, end-of-year class parties, church meetings, school meetings, field trips, graduations, open houses, and all the things to wrap up one school year while sort of planning ahead for next school year. And I know many families are busier than we are!
If you're feeling a little bogged down or overwhelmed by everything you need/want to accomplish in the next couple of weeks, I hope this week's email gives you a chance to take a breather, as well as a few tools to lighten your load as you finish out the month of "May-hem"!
simple food.
These easy pizza sliders are a fantastic go-to recipe when you're running low on time, energy, or groceries.
It's also a great recipe to clean out your fridge, perfect any time of year, and everyone loves them!
A Simple Vegetable Garden: Want to try a small vegetable garden, but don't have a ton of space and/or don't want to spend money on fencing and raised beds? Try simply plopping a few plants right in your front yard like we did. Our front yard garden grew so well, it looked pretty, and we got tons of veggies with very little work or expense! Plus, it was a great way to meet our neighbors.
Our Summer Schedule: A few of you have asked about our summer schedule -- what it's like, if we let our kids sleep in, when we have our meals, how often we let our kids snack, if we let them stay up later, etc.
It's difficult to answer these questions accurately, as every day is different based on various sports camps, the weather, if we're having friends over to swim, etc. But if I were to broadly generalize a summer day in the Dekker house, this would be it:
6/7 - Dave and I wake up and get going on our to-do lists
8:30/9 - Kids sleep in until we wake them up (this is still so amazing!)
9 - Eat a big, hot breakfast together
Head outside (yard work, swimming, walking the dog, playing with neighbors)
12 - Eat a big lunch (we try not to do a morning snack, just 2 big meals)
Hang out by the pool, work on projects, have friends over, etc.
3:00 - Snacks outside (often a variety of produce, meat, cheese, crackers, cookies)
6/6:30 - A later dinner, often outside if possible
9/9:30 - kids shower and get ready for bed
10:30 - Dave and I head to bed
Since it stays light until 10:00 by us during summer months, it's difficult to get to bed much before 9:00. So, for the past few summers (ever since our kids started sleeping in), we've let them stay up later.
Dave and I joke that our entire schedule (except lunch) shifts back 2 hours during summer months... I love it!
Soon enough, our kids will be driving and working summer jobs, so we're trying to hang out together as much as possible while it lasts.
An Instant Screen Door:A couple of months ago, I mentioned how much we liked the retractable screen door to our mudroom, so I thought I'd also mention how much we use and enjoy the magnetic screen door on our office French doors. It's super cheap and is great for letting the breeze come through without the bugs!
our weekly menu:
