Back in 2023, Amy Hupe gave a fantastic talk on meaning and burnout in the tech industry at the State of the Browser conference. Late last year, she gave a follow-up to to that same talk at FF Conf, and it's even better than the original… In her talk, Amy digs into her own experiences with burnout, and emerging on the other side. For her, that involved getting more clarity on the purpose of her work, and how she derives meaning from it. From there, she identified attainable goals with clear ways to measure progress. Her formula is… I've been struggling with burnout myself for probably two or three years now. For me, a big part of that is around the starting point: Purpose. I still love the web as an invention. I love that it lets me turn ideas into reality. I love that it lets me connect with folks I'd otherwise never know. I love that I have access to the world's knowledge at my finger tips. But I hate what the culture of the web and the web industry have become. I've written about this so many times before, but watching an industry that was once a craft become industrialized has been devastating. The web has fallen prey to the fast fashion effect. Far too many people simply don't care about the quality of what we make, as long as it just about works and brings in money today. Art and passion and real human connection have given way to AI and grift and quippy little retorts. I imagine this is a lot like what artists feel like when they're forced to make shitty little tourist trinkets to pay the bills because the really good stuff just doesn't sell. Like this? A Go Make Things membership is the best way to support my work and help me create more free content. Cheers, Want to share this with others or read it later? View it in a browser. |
