| FTA is alerting transit agencies that Phoenix Motorcars (doing business as PhoenixEV) is voluntarily recalling certain Proterra-built transit buses due to an overheating issue that can increase the risk of fire. On September 6, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published voluntary recall information to their website, noting that it applies to 2019 – 2021 Proterra 800V Catalyst and 2020—2022 Proterra ZX5 buses. The vehicle controller software on these buses may allow the electrical circuit for the radiator fan to overheat. Phoenix Motorcars will update the vehicle software free of charge. Today, FTA issued a safety advisory to the transit industry, urging transit agencies that use these buses to ensure the software update is installed. The safety advisory encourages transit agencies to review an April 2024 technical service bulletin from Phoenix Motorcars intended to inform customers about the issue. Bus transit agencies should continue to monitor their fleet for signs of overheating even after the update is complete to ensure the fire risk is mitigated. Owners may also contact Phoenix Motorcars customer service directly at 1-909-987-0815. | | | | |
