| The voice of the world in numbers | | Oct. 8, 2024 | | | Welcome to Front Page, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | | 1. Diminished Safety: Israelis and Palestinians Post-Oct. 7 | | Israel: Over the past two decades, most Israelis have felt safe walking alone at night, but they have felt less safe since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel in 2023. As recently as August, 71% felt safe, consistent with the 68% who felt this way immediately after the attacks. Both post-Oct. 7 measures are down from 82% in 2022. West Bank and East Jerusalem: Safety perceptions for Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem have generally been positive since 2008, reaching 69% before the Oct. 7 attacks in 2023. However, 56% said they felt safe in 2024, marking the lowest percentage in over 10 years. Article Series | 2. Presidential Politics Influence Partisan Third-Party Support | | The Data: Most independents (69%) believe a third major party is needed in the U.S. because the Republican and Democratic Parties “do such a poor job” representing the American people. Closer to half of Democrats (53%) and Republicans (48%) agree. Changes by President: Partisans have typically been more supportive of third parties when the sitting president is from the opposing party and less supportive when their own party is in the White House. Full Story | 3. Americans' Rating of Secret Service Plummets | | The Data: About one in three U.S. adults now rate the Secret Service's performance as “excellent” (8%) or “good” (24%), while 25% say it is “only fair” and 36% “poor.” Historic Drop: The Secret Service has seen a 23-percentage-point drop since 2023. This drop is similar to the largest decrease Gallup has recorded for any agency between measures — the CDC saw a decrease of 24 points, from 64% to 40%, between 2019 and 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. After the Great Recession, the Federal Reserve's rating also showed a 23-point drop, from 53% in 2003 to 30% in 2009. Full Story | 4. Partisan Split on Election Integrity Gets Even Wider | | The Data: Democrats' confidence in the accuracy of the presidential vote increased sharply between 2008 and 2016, from 57% to 85%, while Republicans' confidence declined slightly from 57% to 55%. Local Trust: Amid skepticism about the national picture, Americans are far more positive about the integrity of the vote at their own polling place, as 76% say they are very or somewhat confident the votes will be accurately cast and counted there. The findings from this question also show a much narrower partisan difference, with 90% of Democrats, 71% of independents and 70% of Republicans confident. Full Story | 5. AI Put to Work for Ideas, Consolidation and Automation | | The Data: U.S. employees report using AI primarily for idea generation (41%), data consolidation (39%) and task automation (39%). How Many Use AI? Weekly use remains limited, with just one in 10 saying they use AI that frequently and nearly seven in 10 employees saying they never use it. These figures are essentially unchanged in 2024 compared with 2023. New Data | | | |
