5-block frenzy 🏃 The first phase of Babylon's staking mainnet has just gone live, and needless to say, various protocols and solo stakers were eager to get in on the action.
Within the first hour and a half, fees on the Bitcoin network surged by over 500x from $0.26 to a peak of $132 as users rushed to stake their BTC.
Over 12,000 stakers and 20,000 individual delegates participated in the launch, fulfilling the maximum staking cap of 1000 BTC within just 5 blocks.
Some of the top stakers include prominent Bitcoin yield projects such as Solv Protocol and Lombard, who managed to stake 250 BTC each.
In fact, Lombard paid over $705K in fees to ensure that their staking transactions would be prioritized, securing deposits of 50 BTC per block.
However, it's worth noting that the Babylon mainnet is currently in Phase 1, where there are no real payouts to stakers yet.
Editor's Note: Similar to the ETH staking narrative that we saw earlier this year, it's no surprise that the prospect of BTC staking would draw lots of attention, particularly from users who are eager to earn a yield on their idle BTC. The difference here is that BTC itself does not natively provide staking yield like ETH, so we will have to wait until the launch of Babylon's PoS chain to see whether the returns would be worth the fees paid. |

From PlayStations to Layer-2s 💿 In partnership with Singapore's Startale Labs, Sony is now developing its own Ethereum Layer-2, known as Sonieum.
The network will make use of Optimism's OP stack, following in the footsteps of Coinbase's Base Layer-2 and Worlcoin's World Chain.
According to their announcement on X, Soneium aims to connect Web3 with existing internet-based services, making it easier for users to be introduced to blockchain technology.
The CEO of Startale Labs, Sota Watanabe, also added that their current plan consists of onboarding Sony Products onto Sonieum within the next 2 years.
Sonieum is expected to launch its first testnet in the coming days. |

In Other News... Ethereum L2 Corn Retro Drop Live. The Bitcoin-powered Ethereum Layer 2 solution has just announced an unexpected retroactive airdrop for a diverse group of DeFi users on both Ethereum and Bitcoin networks. USDD No Longer Backed. Justin Sun's TRON has announced that its stablecoin, USDD, will no longer be backed by Bitcoin reserves. Going forward, USDD will be primarily supported by TRON's native token, TRX.
NFT Marketplace MagicEden Reveals Airdrop Token. The upcoming token will be exclusively claimable through the platform's MagicEden Wallet. Details on how the token will be distributed according to the platform's points system remain unclear.
Bitcoin Restaking SatLayer. The Bitcoin restaking platform, which has secured $8M in funding, will be developed on Babylon Chain. The platform aims to enable Bitcoin to mirror the functionality of Ethereum in restaking platforms like Eigenlayer.
DeFi Summer 2025?! A report from Steno Research anticipates that DeFi will experience significant growth and reach an all-time high in 2025. This projection is attributed to expected changes in US interest rates over the coming months.
