About recent Google algo updates The most recent Google March 2024 core update rollout was complete as of April 19, 2024, even though Google waited until April 26, 2024, to announce it. Here are the essential articles from industry experts on the most recent Google updates and their impact. Insights from Marie Haynes According to Marie Haynes, the March 2024 Core Update was a significant change in how Google identifies helpful content, to reduce low-quality, unoriginal content in search results by 45%. She believes that recovery may not be possible for most sites significantly impacted by this update or the September 2023 Helpful Content Update without experimenting with creating original, insightful content that adds value for users. Insights from Glenn Gabe According to Glenn Gabe, the March 2024 Google core update transitioned the helpful content system into the core ranking system, where multiple systems now assess content helpfulness as part of the overall ranking calculation, rather than having a separate HCU classifier. Glenn observed that most sites heavily impacted by the September 2023 HCU(X) update saw further significant drops during the March 2024 core update rollout, contrary to his expectation that some sites would see recovery; he encourages affected site owners who have worked to improve their content to submit feedback to Google. Insights from Mordy Oberstein According to Mordy Oberstein, "My personal take: there was something different about this update. If you combine it all, the extra bite the update had in negatively impacting sites, the extra rank volatility seen at the 6th – 10th rank positions, etc., paints a picture of a very 'unique' update." Insights from Dixon Jones According to Dixon Jones, Helpful Content Updates have divided the SEO world, with some people complaining about their rankings while others at a recent SEO conference hardly mentioned the updates. Dixon suggests that those who have been hit hard by the updates may be relying too heavily on AI tools without properly self-assessing their content, and he emphasizes the importance of adding original insight, focusing on people-first content, and demonstrating expertise in the topic area. John emphasized that recovery is not about simply reverting back to how things were before, as the web and user expectations continue to evolve.
