Soft Power Stable for Now | | The Data: For the seventh straight year, Germany's leadership commanded the highest approval worldwide, with a median approval rating of 46%. The U.S. followed, with 41% global approval, while China (30%) and Russia (22%) trailed behind. Global Perspective: These approval ratings offer insights into international sentiment toward world powers, fielded on the Gallup World Poll based on nationally representative, probability-based samples among adults aged 15 and older in over 130 countries and territories throughout 2023. Interviews were conducted by telephone and in person. New Data | 2. U.S. Leadership Ratings, From Bush to Biden | | The Data: At 41%, global approval of U.S. leadership remained unchanged in 2023. Disapproval ticked up slightly to 36%. Trend Analysis: Approval of U.S. leadership has fluctuated over the years, dipping and soaring under different leaders, from George W. Bush to Joe Biden. Losses and Gains Among Key Regional Partners | | The Data: Approval of U.S. leadership increased by double digits in 13 countries between 2022 and 2023 and dropped by 10 percentage points or more in nine countries. Key Countries: The countries where approval of U.S. leadership fell substantially included key regional partners such as India, Ukraine and Kenya. Ratings increased by at least 10 points in several countries — including Israel, where approval soared to a record-high 81%. Latest Article | 4. Russia's Continued Unpopularity | | The Data: For the second straight year, a majority of adults worldwide were critical of Russia's leadership, with 53% disapproving and 22% approving. Global Context: Russia's leadership approval rating declined significantly in 2022 following the start of its military operation in Ukraine. Disdain remains strong in Europe, but there are signs it is shifting, particularly in Africa. Full Report | 5. U.S. Loses Its Edge in Africa as China and Russia Rise | | The Data: In Africa, median approval of China's leadership stood at 58%, closely followed by the U.S. at 56%. Germany followed at 54%, while Russia had the lowest approval rating at 42%. Shifting Trends: While easily topping other countries in 2022, the U.S. lost its edge in Africa in 2023. China's median approval rating in the region increased from 52% in 2022 to 58% in 2023 as fewer people said they had no opinion. After setbacks in 2022, Russia regained ground in 2023.
