| The World's Voice in Numbers | | April 16, 2024 | | | Welcome to Front Page, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | | 1. Commander-in-Character: Biden vs. Trump | | The Data: Americans are significantly more likely to find Joe Biden likable than Donald Trump (57% vs. 37%, respectively). Biden also has an advantage over Trump in being seen as honest and trustworthy (46% vs. 35%). But Trump is perceived as stronger and more decisive than Biden (57% vs. 38%) and more adept at managing the government (49% vs. 39%). The candidates are roughly matched in perceptions of intelligence, putting the country's interests ahead of their own political interests, caring about people's needs and displaying good judgment in a crisis. Contrasting Strengths: Notably, Biden's main strength — likability — is one of Trump's biggest weaknesses, along with perceptions that Trump is honest and trustworthy. Conversely, Trump's top trait — being a strong and decisive leader — ranks as Biden's weakest. Full Story | 2. Sleepless in America | | The Data: Sleep duration has shifted since 1942, with Americans getting eight or more hours decreasing from 59% to 26% — and those getting five hours or less increasing from 3% to 20%. Gender Gap: Continuing the pattern since 2001, women remain less likely than men to report getting enough sleep. The latest poll finds 36% of women versus 48% of men saying they get the sleep they need. Further, younger women, at 27%, are much less likely than other age-by-gender groups to report getting adequate sleep. Full Story | 3. Tax Day | | The Data: Sixty percent of Americans in April 2023 considered their federal income taxes “too high.” Annual Measure: Americans were last this critical of income taxes in 2001, before George W. Bush signed the first of two major tax cut laws passed during his term. The latest results are based on Gallup's annual Economy and Personal Finance survey, conducted April 3-25, 2023. The 2024 update will be released this spring. Stay Tuned | 4. The Air We Breathe | | The Data: Among Americans living in rural areas, Black and Hispanic adults express significantly more concern about air pollution than White adults do. Racial Differences: While concerns about exposure to environmental pollution and contamination are similar across racial/ethnic groups among those living in urban areas, they differ among Americans of different racial/ethnic backgrounds living in towns, suburbs and rural areas. Full Story | 5. What Makes a Great Leader? | | Arthur Brooks: The esteemed author, academic and social commentator, with notable works such as From Strength to Strength, discusses what makes a great leader. Quote: “Lead yourself, and then you can lead others. And if you're going to lead yourself, you better know yourself. If you're going to know yourself, you better know your strengths and weaknesses.” Watch Video | | |
