Great Hills Park on January 17.
For the next two weeks, as for the past one, rather than "Portraits of Wildflowers" this blog should more appropriately be called "Winter Wonderland," and for once an icy reception would be a good thing.

It's a familiar ploy in politics: a politician who has maintained position X for a long time not only suddenly reverses it, but also then lies and claims he has always been anti-X. The latest instance of that flip-flop-plus-lying involves the southern border of the United States, which for three years the current administration has been letting millions of people cross illegally and stay in the country, while vigorously and frequently claiming that the border is "secure."
What occasioned the sudden lie this week? A little matter of a presidential election nine months from now. Recent polls indicate that for many Americans, unchecked illegal immigration has become their #1 issue.
President Joe Biden acknowledged on Friday that the southern border is not secure, undercutting years of lies by his administration and spin by the news media.
During Biden's three years in office, the United States has repeatedly set new record highs for illegal border crossings, including by migrants on the FBI's terrorist watch list, and drug smuggling from Mexico. Still, Biden's aides have insisted the border is "closed," "not open," and totally "secure."
When Republicans have criticized Biden for failing to address the reality at the border, news outlets have played defense for the president and his White House.
Following that beginning of a January 23rd article by Drew Holden and Thaleigha Rampersad in the Washington Free Beacon are 10 quotations in which prominent news media "played defense" for the administration's open-border policy. And here's the dénouement:
Asked by a reporter at the White House on Friday whether the border is secure, Biden said, "No, it's not. I haven't believed that for the last 10 years, and I've said it for the last 10 years."
Just as a reminder, two years ago I reported how the current administration was using public funds to bus illegal immigrants wherever they wanted to go inside our country. In 2021, at the peak of the pandemic, I reported how the current administration was so eager to bring in as many illegal immigrants as possible that it didn't even require them to be tested for Covid—at the same time that American citizens returning from foreign countries had to show proof of vaccination.
And of course there's the latest proof of true intent, the current administration's lawsuit to be allowed to cut down barbed wire that the Texas government has deployed to try to keep people from entering the state illegally.
