Engaged & Thriving Institutions: The Strengths-Based Approach

Supporting Education Nationwide

Helping Institutions Everywhere Thrive

The beginning of the school year is an exciting, hope-filled time. Leaders, faculty, staff and students alike are thinking about what they hope to accomplish in the coming year.

Education remains vitally important.

Despite the noise surrounding education, nearly three in four adults (74%) say a two- to four-year degree is now equally as important (35%) or more important (39%) in securing a successful career compared with 20 years ago.

And 80% of the parents of children attending K-12 say they are completely or somewhat satisfied with their oldest child's education.

We know that every institution has their own unique philosophy about how to foster student success.

Whatever your strategy is, Gallup will work with you to provide the tools and resources you need to create thriving classrooms, campuses and districts.

Learn more about how Gallup works with institutions of all types to help them accomplish their unique mission.

Leading With Strengths

A strengths-based approach works best when it's aimed at an existing mission or purpose. That's exactly what the University of Tennessee (UT) did — they used CliftonStrengths to promote their goal of holistic student support and wellbeing on campus.

Gallup CEO Jon Clifton recently sat down with UT Chancellor Donde Plowman to talk about how the school uses strengths to build an inclusive campus for UT students.

New Data on Higher Ed

Americans' Confidence in Higher Education Down Sharply

A sign reads 'University' in front of a building on a college campus.

Despite the fact that most adults still see the value in earning a degree, public opinion of higher education has fallen since 2015.

Only 36% of Americans have "a great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in higher education, down 20 percentage points from eight years ago.

It's a troubling statistic but not altogether unsurprising given the polarizing rhetoric surrounding education and the overall decline in average confidence in major U.S. institutions in the last three years.

Despite the drop, a majority of current college students say their degree is worth the cost.

Faculty and Staff

Ensure your faculty and staff have the confidence that comes with knowing what they do best.

Here's what one educator had to say about how strengths influenced his career.

"Strengths have changed my life in a very profound way. I always knew that I was high energy and had a passion for people. When I read about my Woo, I thought about my role as a faculty member and how I make a commitment to get to know all my students by name. All my strengths play into my role as an educator."
— Mike Finnegan (Woo, Communication, Maximizer, Adaptability, Positivity)
