5. Clean Water in America

Line Chart: Worry about drinking water pollution in the U.S. by racial group, 2001-2023.

In one of the wealthiest nations on the planet, three in four Black adults say they worry a "great deal" about pollution in their drinking water. From Flint, Michigan, to Jackson, Mississippi, predominantly Black communities have been at the forefront of the nation's reckoning on clean water. We find that worry among Black Americans is 20 percentage points higher than the national average.
