Welcome to The Week in Charts, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | 1. Americans' Mental Health Ratings Lowest in Gallup Trend | | Americans are rating their own mental health worse than they have in the past 20 years. While mental health has always been an important topic, the COVID-19 lockdowns and ensuing life disruption brought the issue to an unprecedented degree of importance. Americans' ratings of their mental health as "excellent" continue to sink. Read Article | | 2. The World Is Not Doing Much Better | | The Gallup World Poll this year documented the unwelcome news that the entire globe continues to see a gradual and sustained rise in unhappiness. While it's nearly impossible to generalize across 8 billion lives, and not all of us are doing worse than we were previously, average negative emotions such as stress, worry, sadness and others are all up. | | 3. Religious Tradition | | Did you go to a church, synagogue or mosque in the past week? Thirty percent of Americans claim they have. That's about the same as most years of late, although the recent rise in those identifying their religious preference as "none" has seemed to taper off for now. But don't worry — we didn't ask the question this past week, so we didn't bias our data with the once-a-year attendee crowd (yours truly included). Read Article | | 4. Trouble at the Pharmacy | | Has there been a bit of an audible groan at your local drugstore lately? In a sneak peek at our upcoming "honesty and ethics" ratings for U.S. industries, pharmacists' image took a bit of a dip, sinking to a new low. This dip comes while major chains — CVS and Walgreens — have agreed to pay $10 billion to settle lawsuits over the opioid crisis. Furthermore, industry reports of a serious talent crunch leading to longer pharmacy lines and more Americans getting meds in the mail could help explain it. | | 5. Charitable Giving | | It's not all doom and gloom, because global giving has reached new highs! Whether it's helping a stranger, volunteering our time or donating money to a worthy cause, we are living in a world that is more generous than at any time in the past 15 years. | | And with that, from the whole team at The Week in Charts, Happy New Year!
