Welcome to The Week in Charts, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | 1. How Resilient Is the World? | | The new World Risk Poll is out and jam-packed with findings about global resilience in situations of disaster. The research shows that only about half of the world's population would be able to protect themselves and their families from the impact of natural or other disasters. The report by Lloyd's Register Foundation highlights that while the state of infrastructure is key to such resilience, community cohesion (proven to be one of the most important factors) is higher in low- than high-income countries. Our monthly congressional job approval number is showing a slight improvement, driven by Democrats. Their rating of Congress rose 14 percentage points to 39% between June/July and August/September. Republicans' and independents' most recent approval ratings of Congress are statistically similar to the June/July readings. Read Article | | 3. Women's Emotional Health in India | | The latest Hologic Global Women's Health Index report highlights some concerning shifts in negative emotions among women in India. In 2021, the index picked up a 20-point or more increase in daily sadness, worry, stress and anger experienced by women across the subcontinent. Most concerning on the global level was the near doubling of the gap in health index scores between women in high- vs. low-income economies. Read Report | | 4. SCOTUS Image at Rock Bottom | | While the Supreme Court has been out of the headlines in recent weeks, our September poll found public trust in the court sitting at an all-time low. Trust in the judicial branch has declined among both independents and Democrats over the past year. Meanwhile, perceptions that the court is too conservative — which we've seen increase steadily since 2016 — have reached 42%, a new high. Read Article | | 5. The State of Iranian Freedom | | As recent anti-government protests spread across Iran and counterprotests organized in support of the government, we looked at how Iranians have been feeling about freedom in their own lives. Before the recent social eruption, about four in 10 Iranians said they were dissatisfied with the freedom they have to choose what to do with their lives. | | And that's The Week in Charts!
