New on the Blog: How I organize everything in our kitchen! Over the last few weeks, several people have asked our kids if they are "doing anything for Spring Break" -- which of course means, "Are you going on vacation?". The kids don't know this yet, and it always warms my heart when I hear their response... "Yes!" they eagerly reply, "We're going to a Griffin's game (a local hockey team), and maybe Rebounderz, and Culver's... and we'll probably play lots of basketball, build LEGOs, make s'mores, and sleep in!" I'm so glad I held my tongue when I almost apologetically explained that we were "just staying home". Who says staying home is the less-fun option? We'll have no layovers, no traffic jams, no lost luggage, no delays, no big bills to pay, and no piles of laundry at the end of the week... actually, we'll still have laundry, but I'm OK with that! Also, lesson learned (yet again) for me, that my perspective will transfer over to my kids. If I had bemoaned the fact that we are "just staying home", they would have instantly associated being home as the negative alternative to a fancy vacation. But instead, we're all excited for a fun week at home together. Bring it on Spring Break... the Dekkers are ready for you! Simple Food. Hardboiled eggs are one of my favorite snacks (2 of our kids love them too)... so even though Dave can't stand the smell, I usually keep a few in the fridge. If you love hardboiled eggs but don't love the finicky boiling process, or if you need a bunch of hardboiled eggs for an upcoming Easter celebration, you MUST try my method of baking them in the oven -- it's practically foolproof! The kids absolutely LOVE these lists... and they are such simple, frugal ways to liven up our days at home. If you're staying home for Spring Break, I suggest making your own fun to-do lists! Miss Clara Jo celebrated her half birthday over the weekend with half of a 4-layer chocolate cake with chocolate mouse frosting and unicorn rainbow sprinkles (yup, that girls knows exactly what she wants!) She told me she sort of misses being "just 4", and then in the same breath, asked how many more days until she is 5. I LOVE this age... and I love celebrating half birthdays (read more about our simple half birthday traditions). I created a cute printable Easter tag for a thing at church. We paired it with little bags of Jelly Beans (1 of each color). I put the printable on my blog in case you want to use it too. It's free! And speaking of free printables, I have quite a few in my Member's Only Library... take a look! Did you see that fanny packs are back in style? Although, it's apparently only cool if you wear them over our shoulder like a regular purse. Personally, I'm still recovering from the trauma of wearing fanny packs for every family outing throughout my elementary years... (I'm the one on the right). So I have no intention of adopting this trend yet! That's all for today... I'll be back next week with my Favorite Things (no fanny packs on my list!) In the meantime, make sure you check out my kitchen organization. ~Andrea |
