Shopify Blog Mistakes were made: What we've learned about failure while growing an 8-figure businessHey everyone, welcome back. In creating this series, I've realized that the hardest part of building a business might be managing your mindset. So today, we're going to talk about the low points—specifically, failure. Let's jump right into Episode 5, all about making mistakes. Learning really comes down to figuring out what does and doesn't work. When you look at things that way, failure really is an inherent part of growth—so why is it still so intimidating? I've experienced a lot of failure while growing our business. We used packaging customers hated. We sent bottles that leaked during shipment. And, as the team's most seasoned marketer, I've run ads that flopped, I've made website changes I didn't track, and I've even accidentally triggered email spam filters during our BFCM campaigns. Ouch! Each of these failures, though, were a single moment in time. We made the mistakes, dealt with the consequences, and returned to each problem smarter than we were before. To paraphrase an old saying: failure usually isn't fatal, but failure to change certainly is. We've found that each failure is telling us something needs to change—and we make sure to listen. So let's talk about failure. And more importantly, let's talk about how to bounce back. | |
