Finding a Way
Forward Living with
a Rare Blood Cancer
Hollywood filmmaker Todd Strauss-Schulson interviews his energetic, on-the-go aunt Pearl about living with polycythemia vera (PV) – a rare blood cancer they have in common – and how she has managed to navigate finding a path forward.
Understanding Polycythemia Vera
PV is a rare, chronic blood cancer within a group of conditions known as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). PV causes the bone marrow to produce too many blood cells, thickening the blood and making it harder to flow through arteries and veins, which can strain the spleen. Around 100,000 people in the United States live with PV.
A Family Conversation
Pearl spent decades building a full life – a devoted 60-year marriage, a fun-loving family, daily water aerobics with friends. But for more than eight years, PV forced her to struggle, yet she didn't give up.
Her nephew Todd traveled to Florida to connect about the rare blood cancer diagnosis they share. "There's this sense of something hanging over you," Todd says. On this trip, Todd hoped the two could have "the kind of deep conversation I don't really get to have with her at Passover or Thanksgiving."
