 | The voice of the world in numbers | | | Feb. 3, 2026 | | | Welcome to Front Page, Gallup's indispensable intelligence distilled into five charts that give leaders the insights they need to make their most important decisions. | | | 1. About Half of Americans Have Flown in the Past Year | | | | The Data: Forty-five percent of U.S. adults say they have taken at least one commercial flight in the past year, essentially back to normal after the pandemic-era low of 38% in 2021. Number of Flights: Among those who have flown in the past year, the average number of trips is 3.8, below the high of 4.6 recorded in 2006 and 2015. Among U.S. adults overall, the average number remains modest, at 1.7. Download Data | | | 2. Spirit of Altruism | | | | The Data: In 2025, 76% of U.S. adults reported donating money to a religious organization or other charitable cause, while 63% reported volunteering their time. These figures represent a five-percentage-point drop in financial giving and a seven-point rise in volunteering since 2021. The percentage donating has trended downward over the past quarter century, while volunteering has been fairly steady, except for a dip during the pandemic. Secular and Religious Giving: The decline in charitable giving since 2001 is due to drops in both religious and secular giving. Less than half of Americans, 41%, said they have donated to a religious group in the past year, down 21 points from 2001. Meanwhile, the percentage contributing to other causes has fallen 10 points, to 69%. Read More | | | 3. Number of Books Read Per Year | | | | The Data: U.S. adults say they've read an average of 14.6 books in the past year (either all or part of the way through). This is up from 12.6 in 2021 but below the 1999 high of 18.5. No Books: Thirteen percent of Americans say they have read no books in the past year, a slight decline from 17% in 2021 and on the low end of the 12% to 18% range recorded in Gallup's periodic trends on this measure since 1990. Moviegoing Well Below Pre-Pandemic Levels | | | | The Data: U.S. adults report seeing an average of 2.6 movies in theaters in the past year, up from 1.4 in 2021 but representing a sharp decrease from the historical norm. From 1993 to 2007, Americans typically averaged at least four movies a year. The Trend: Among those who have gone to the movies at least once in the past year, the average number of films seen is 4.3, down from over 7.0 among moviegoers in the 1990s and early 2000s. Movie theater attendance has declined significantly over the past two decades. Download Data | | | 5. Extreme Cold in 1977 Affected a Third of Americans | | | | The Data: In February 1977, 33% of U.S. adults said cold weather that winter had created hardships for them or their family. The rate exceeded 40% in the Great Lakes region and in the Southeast, which were the two areas most affected by that year's “cold anomaly.” Hardships: High fuel costs, missed work or layoffs, and frozen pipes were among the most commonly reported disruptions. Other challenges included difficulty heating homes, cold-related illnesses and transportation problems. Read Vault | | | | | |
