Week in Review 28 June 2025
Catch up on this week's must-read stories

The Middle East continued to remain high on the agenda this week. The Secretary-General welcomed a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, brokered by the United States, expressing hope that it can be replicated in other conflicts in the region.

Relatedly, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stressed the need for its inspectors to return to Iran's nuclear facilities to evaluate damage caused by the recent bombing and to verify stockpiles of highly enriched uranium.

The Secretary-General renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, where the humanitarian situation has reached "horrific proportions." Hungry people continue to risk their lives in search of food. At least 410 Palestinians have been killed trying to collect food from new aid distribution hubs since they began operating in late May, according to the UN human rights office, OHCHR.

This was also a milestone week as 26 June marked 80 years since the signing of the UN Charter, the Organization's founding document. The UN is also looking ahead and reaffirming its relevance in an ever-changing world through the UN80 Initiative.

Among the goals is advancing sustainable development, especially as the world needs an extra $4 trillion every year to address challenges such as ending poverty, fighting climate change and reducing inequality.  Our reports continued to pave the way to the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development taking place next week in Sevilla, Spain, where a UN News team will be on the ground.
