Majid Asgaripour/WANA via REUTERS Israel strikes Iran Israel launched widescale strikes against Iran, saying it targeted nuclear facilities, ballistic missile factories and military commanders during the start of a prolonged operation. Iran promised a harsh response and Israel said it was working to intercept about 100 drones launched towards Israeli territory in retaliation. You can follow our live updates here. Airlines cleared out of the airspace over Israel, Iran and Iraq and Jordan, with carriers scrambling to divert and cancel flights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened Iran for years, but many saw it as a bluff. The strikes appear to be a snub to President Donald Trump, who had repeatedly pushed him not to attack. In other news Rescuers searched for missing people and aircraft debris in charred buildings in Ahmedabad after more than 240 people were killed in an Air India Boeing 787 crash. The sole survivor said he walked out of a broken emergency exit. A US appeals court allowed Trump to maintain his deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles amid protests over stepped-up immigration enforcement, temporarily pausing a lower court ruling that blocked the mobilization. Democratic Senator Alex Padilla was shoved, forced to the ground and handcuffed by security after attempting to ask a question at a press conference held by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem about immigration raids. Kenyan authorities arrested a police constable in relation to the death of a political blogger who was in custody, as angry protests over the case raged in the capital Nairobi. Rioters attacked police with petrol bombs, rocks and fireworks in the Northern Irish town of Portadown as a fourth night of anti-immigrant violence moved to a different part of the British-run province. Business & Markets   Global stock markets dived and oil prices surged after Israel struck Iran, with rattled investors shifting towards safe havens such as gold and the Swiss franc. The Federal Reserve's path to interest rate cuts starting in September appeared to widen, after a pair of government reports pointed to cooler inflation and signs of potential weakening in the labor market. Nearly all the iPhones exported by Foxconn from India went to the United States between March and May, customs data showed, far above the 2024 average of 50% and a clear sign of Apple's efforts to bypass high US tariffs imposed on China. Facebook-owner Meta has invested in Scale AI in a deal that values the data-labeling startup at $29 billion and brings in its 28-year-old CEO, Alexandr Wang, to play a prominent role in the tech giant's artificial intelligence strategy. Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su unveiled a new artificial intelligence server for 2026 that aims to challenge Nvidia's flagship offerings as OpenAI's CEO said the ChatGPT creator would adopt AMD's latest chips. Chime Financial's shares surged 59% in their hotly anticipated Nasdaq debut, valuing the digital bank at $18.4 billion and extending a winning streak for new stock market listings. The Week Ahead The Air India plane crash will cast a somber mood over the Paris Airshow, the global aviation industry's largest trade fair, which kicks off on Monday.
