Great Retirement Divide | | The Data: While 59% of U.S. adults have a retirement savings plan, just 28% of those in households earning under $50,000 a year have a retirement account, compared with 83% of those earning at least $100,000. This same pattern holds based on education: 81% of college graduates versus 39% of adults with no college education have a retirement plan. The Gap: Retirement savings rates also vary by age, rising from 39% among 18- to 29-year-olds to 70% among those aged 50 to 64. More See Religious Influence Ascending | | The Data: Thirty-four percent of U.S. adults now say religion is increasing its influence on American life, up from 20% a year ago. The Trend: This marks a reversal in the dominant pattern seen since 2009, when significantly more Americans have typically said religion was losing its influence. Latest Data | | | 3. Pride Meets Prejudice | | The Data: In 2024, a median of 39% of adults across more than 120 countries said their city or area is a good place to live for gay or lesbian people, while 45% said it is not. Regional Contrast: Nordic nations lead in perceptions of inclusivity — such as Iceland (93%), Sweden (90%), Norway (89%) and Finland (85%) — while perceived hospitality toward gay or lesbian people is lowest in parts of Africa and across the Caucasus and Central Asia. Born This Way? | | The Data: Forty-five percent of Americans say being gay or lesbian is something a person is born with, while 38% attribute it to external factors such as environment and upbringing. The Trend: The public has leaned more toward “nature” than “nurture” in most years since 2013, a shift from earlier decades when the opposite was true. New Data | | | 5. Split Decision: Gender and Sports | | The Data: Sixty-nine percent of U.S. adults say transgender athletes should only play on teams matching their birth sex. Two-thirds say government documents such as driver's licenses or passports should reflect birth sex, not gender identity.
