| The three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit will hold a hearing at 3 PM ET to consider the merits of a lower court order temporarily blocking the Trump administration's deployment of troops to quell immigration-relation protests in Los Angeles. Here's what to know: |
|
|
- The court on June 12 paused a lower court's order, allowing the troop deployment to remain in effect while the administration's appeal played out.
- U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco earlier found that Trump's deployment of the National Guard was unlawful and ordered it to return to the control of California Governor Gavin Newsom.
- The Trump administration immediately appealed the judge's order, calling Breyer's ruling "an extraordinary intrusion on the President's constitutional authority as Commander in Chief."
- In his ruling, Breyer wrote that the presence of the troops in the city was itself inflaming tensions with protesters and depriving the state of the ability to use the Guard for other purposes.
- Trump justified the deployment of troops by characterizing the protests in Los Angeles as a "rebellion," but Breyer said in his temporary restraining order that the protests fell far short of that legal standard. Read more.

- U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan will hold a status conference in a challenge to President Donald Trump's use of the Alien Enemies Act to swiftly deport Venezuelans. Hellerstein has already issued a preliminary injunction blocking such deportations.
- In New Jersey, U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin will weigh a challenge from a longtime U.S. resident facing deportation not to his native country of Egypt but to an unidentified third country. Lawyers for Karem Tadros, arrested last month, will argue for his release. His attorneys said he has been protected from removal based on a longstanding court order.
- Chicago-based U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly will hold a status conference in antitrust litigation accusing technology provider MultiPlan and a group of insurers of conspiring to underpay healthcare providers billions of dollars in reimbursements for out-of-network health services.
- Sean 'Diddy' Combs' sex trafficking trial continues in New York.
