American Bar Association sues to block Trump's attacks on law firms

The American Bar Association sued the Trump administration today, seeking an order that would bar the White House from pursuing what the ABA called a campaign of intimidation against major law firms.

The lawsuit, filed in D.C. federal court, said the administration violated the U.S. Constitution in a series of executive orders targeting law firms over their past clients and lawyers they hired. "There has never been a more urgent time for the ABA to defend its members, our profession and the rule of law itself," the group's president, William Bay, said in a statement.

The ABA, with about 150,000 paying members, is the country's largest voluntary association for lawyers. A White House spokesperson had no immediate comment.

The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider reviving a New Jersey crisis pregnancy center operator's bid to block the Democratic-led state's attorney general from investigating whether it deceived women into believing it offered abortions.

The justices also agreed to hear a bid by Chevron, Exxon Mobil and other oil and gas companies to have lawsuits brought by two Louisiana localities accusing them of harming the state's coast over a period of decades moved out of state court and into federal court.

Meanwhile, the court gave a boost to a challenge by the Catholic Diocese of Albany to a 2017 New York state regulation that generally requires employer-sponsored health insurance plans to cover abortions. The Supreme Court also turned away a bid to revive a copyright infringement lawsuit accusing pop star Ed Sheeran of unlawfully copying from the late singer Marvin Gaye's 1973 classic "Let's Get It On" in his 2014 hit song "Thinking Out Loud."
