Well done Marsha, from all of us at CAN! | | CAN Advisor Gives Evidence to the UK Government Social Inquiry | | One of CAN's volunteer advisors, Dr Karen Middleton (University of Portsmouth), appeared as an expert witness in the UK Government's inquiry into social media, misinformation, and harmful algorithms. The inquiry, led by the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee, was set up following rising concern that UK online safety laws risk being outpaced by rapidly advancing technology and the politicisation of social media platforms. During the panel discussion, Dr Middleton highlighted the lack of accountability in the current advertising ecosystem, which allows harmful content to be financially supported through programmatic advertising models. She also revealed how the lack of transparency in the media supply chain makes it difficult to track the funding of such content. "Right now, the way digital advertising works means that harmful content - misinformation, hate speech, and even fraud - can end up being funded without advertisers even realising it. The system is so complex and automated that there's little accountability. We need stronger regulations and better industry practices to make sure that advertising money isn't fueling the very problems we're trying to fight online. It's about making the internet a safer place for everyone." Dr Karen Middleton - School of Strategy, Marketing, and Innovation, University of Portsmouth At CAN, we hope to see further conversations like this brought to Parliament so that we can drive forward the change that is needed for a more transparent advertising ecosystem. | | Trans+ History Week 2025 Community Event | | As part of Trans+ History Week, taking place 5 - 11 May, QueerAF are hosting event on Tuesday 6 May which is set to include: The activities & conversations QueerAF have lined up have been curated to bring everyone together and help us understand the issues, challenges & collective action needed to centre and unify us ahead of Pride Month. This is a call to action for advertisers to invest in trusted news and journalism. The Alliance have created a four-point manifesto: -
Champion trusted journalism – critical to the advertising ecosystem and society as a whole. -
Actively invest in news environments – all the evidence shows it works. -
Reconsider what brand safety means – especially in the context of news. -
Review advertising block lists – ensure news isn't being unintentionally penalised. By investing in trusted news, advertisers are supporting a healthy media ecosystem that benefits both brand safety and brand reputation. "Our role as The News Alliance is to collectively champion the benefits of advertising in regulated and professionally produced news environments. We need to land the valuable role trusted journalism plays in the media ecosystem as well as driving home how important it is to society."
