THIS WEEK ON THE BLOG:
- 10 Healthier food swaps.
- What to do when decluttering feels wasteful.
- Tips to alleviate Restless Leg Syndrome.
It's been another cold week here, and we're all thankful for a warm house, cozy slippers, and lots of yummy comfort foods to keep us going.
This time of year especially, I often think about how difficult life must have been 100+ years ago when nothing was automatic and everything (especially housework) was difficult and time-consuming.
Just the other day, I had both washing machines and dryers washing and drying our clothes, the oven baking cookies and bread, the stovetop simmering soup, a dishwasher ready to wash all the dishes, the fridge keeping everything cold, and the furnace pumping out more than enough heat for our entire home.
I was warm and comfortable in my favorite fleece-lined joggers, sweatshirt, and slippers... and with a push of a button on our Keurig, I had hot tea ready to drink.
My biggest discomfort of the day was bundling up to take the dog for a couple of short walks.
I say this because I know it's easy to forget how much we have to be thankful for -- even on very cold, very windy, very dreary winter days.
I, for one, am thankful I don't need to scrub laundry by hand and hang it in the basement to drip dry (and then iron it all), or chop wood to heat our house, or wash all my dishes by hand, or stand over a hot stove all day to prepare food for my family.
In 2025, I can keep my home running smoothly by pressing a few buttons and turning a few knobs, all while listening to my favorite ebook or podcast!
I know it's not actually that simple... but instead of complaining the next time you need to make a meal or do the laundry, consider gratitude for modern conveniences that allow homemaking to be much more pleasant.
Cheers!
simple food. Many of us want to "eat healthier," but what does that mean, and how should we start? As with so many areas of life, my solution is to start small and make a few easy swaps to begin enjoying more nutritious meals with your family.
organized home. Do you ever feel wasteful when you donate and declutter? If so, I think you'll enjoy my answer to a reader question about "what to do when decluttering feels wasteful".
intentional living. I've had Restless Legs Syndrome since I was very young. Now, as an adult, these tried-and-true tips help alleviate the restlessness (which is especially annoying for me during cold winter months).
our menu:
I'm trying a couple of new recipes this week!
- Tuscan-style Chicken Soup (NEW), sourdough rolls, fruit (pictured above)
- Wet Burritos, chips, salsa, guac.
- Easy Baked Sandwiches, green beans, chips, fruit
- Hashbrown Crusted Quiche, apple cinnamon bread, yogurt parfaits
- Out to eat (the kids are sleeping over at my parents!)
- Smash Burger Tacos (NEW), potato wedges, salad, fruit, pickles 🥒
- Charcuterie board for movie night
A NOTE ABOUT LEFTOVERS: Many of you have asked what we do with our leftovers, as I rarely plan to eat leftovers for a specific dinner. Dave and I both eat leftovers for lunches throughout the week, and the kids eat leftovers on the weekend (sometimes during the week as well).
We also regularly portion out single servings of our meals into disposable containers for elderly people from church.
Finally, I'm pretty good at estimating how much food we'll eat for a family dinner and 2 leftover lunches, so I don't make a ton more than we'll need unless I'm making a double meal for the freezer.
