| The voice of the world in numbers | | Jan. 21, 2025 | | | Welcome to Front Page, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | | 1. GOP Edge | | The Data: In 2024, Americans' political party preferences remained narrowly split, with 46% identifying as or leaning Republican and 45% identifying as or leaning Democratic. This is the third consecutive year the GOP has held a marginal advantage; before 2022, the last time they led in party identification and leaning was 1991. What This Means: In an election year marked by low satisfaction with the direction of the U.S., negative evaluations of the U.S. economy and low job approval ratings for Democratic President Joe Biden, Republicans held a one-percentage-point advantage in national party ID in 2024. Amid this challenging climate for the incumbent Democratic Party, Republicans regained the presidency by nearly the same margin. Read More | 2. Political Independents Surge | | The Data: Before asking independents which major party they lean toward, 43% of Americans identify as independents (43%), with the rest split between Democrats (28%) and Republicans (28%). The Trend: The percentage of U.S. adults identifying as independents has been consistently high since 2011, peaking at an annual average of 43% three times: in 2014, 2023 and 2024. Read More | 3. Less Moderate | | The Data: Thirty-four percent of Americans described their political views as moderate in 2024, matching their low point in Gallup's trend since 1992. The 37% identifying as conservative was near the long-term average, while the 25% of Americans identifying as liberal was close to the historical high. Zooming Out: Gallup's three-decade trend on ideology documents an increase in the percentage of Americans saying they are liberal and a concurrent decline among moderates, while conservatism has been relatively steady over the years. Full Story | 4. Conservatism High Within GOP | | The Data: Since 1994, a majority of Republicans have consistently identified as conservative — but in 2024, this measure reached 77%, marking a new high by two points and a four-point increase from 2023. Meanwhile, Democrats: The 55% of Democrats identifying as liberal in 2024 is the highest for that group by one point, and it includes 19% who say they are very liberal. Democrats' liberal identification has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Full Story | 5. Balanced Ideological Extremes | | The Data: Although conservatives outnumber liberals overall, the “very liberal” (9%) and “very conservative” (10%) groups are closely matched. 2024 Findings: This edition of Front Page is dedicated to Gallup's annual look at U.S. party identification and political ideology. The results are based on combined data from Gallup's 2024 telephone surveys, encompassing interviews with more than 14,000 U.S. adults.
