Yesterday, Google announced that it's pre-complying with an Executive Order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and will display it that way on their maps. The White House also released an Executive Order attacking trans kids. Now is a really good time to ask your company how they plan to handle stuff like this. What happens if your insurance provider decides to stop covering gender affirming care, reproductive care, and so on—because they're compelled to by EO or decide to preemptively comply? Will your company resist immoral demands, or comply with them before they're compelled to? It often feels like these decisions are out of our hands. They're made by executives. They're above your pay grade. You don't get paid to make those kind of strategic of business decisions. But maybe you should have a say. As an employee, you actually have a tremendous amount of power. You actually build the things. The folks who make the decisions generally cannot (nor can they fix what you build if it breaks). Now feels like a good time to read (or re-read) Ethan Marcotte's book You Deserve a Tech Union, watch this video on unionization, or poke around this website. I'm not necessarily saying "start a union." But do think about how you and your colleagues can amplify each others voices by speaking as one. Like this? A Go Make Things membership is the best way to support my work and help me create more free content. Cheers, Want to share this with others or read it later? View it in a browser. |
