[Go Make Things] Free and indie

The tl;dr of today's article: I've decided to refocus on sharing my best work for free—through my newsletter, my podcast, and my YouTube channel.

If you want to support me, the best way is through a Go Make Things Membership, but it's completely optional.

If you want to know more about why I'm switching up how I do things, keep reading…

Developer education has become exploitive

I'm finding myself increasingly uncomfortable with the exploitive nature of charging large sums of money for courses when so much of how I learned to build for the web was from free or extremely cheap resources.

My entire career only exists because so many awesome people—Chris Coyier, Ethan Marcotte, Nicole Sullivan, and too many others to mention—shared everything they knew freely on the web.

But our industry has reached a point of so much manufactured complexity that some educators now charge $400 to $700 for their courses.

And for a while, I was one of them! As I shifted from doing this is a side thing to making it my full-time job, my prices started to go up-and-up-and-up.

And that meant that a lot of folks simply couldn't afford it!

I tried to balance this with location-based pricing (often called pricing parity), generous discounts, and frequent sales, but it still left some folks shut out.

My goal to improve the web

I love the web, and I love being able to build things from the wild ideas in my head.

The more people I can help build things for the web—sustainably, accessibly, and well—the better. Gating my best work behind a paywall is what capitalism tells is the the right move, but it actively works against my personal goals.

So I'm changing things up!

Go Make Things Membership

My focus is now on sharing my best work for free through my newsletter, my podcast, and my YouTube channel.

If you want to help me do that, the best way is through a Go Make Things Membership.

For as little as $3/month, you can help me produce more free articles, videos, and podcast episodes on building a better, simpler web.

And as a thanks, members get some cool perks, including…

  • Access to my private Discord community.
  • All of my web dev guides, searchable and organized by topic.
  • Access to my personal code snippet collection.

Nearly all of the membership content is also available for free here on my website or my YouTube channel. The members-only portal just curates the content in an easier-to-navigate form, with the latest versions of my content and some suggested learning paths.

If you can't afford it or just don't want to join, no worries. You're not going to miss out!

And if you want to support me but not on a recurring basis, you can also buy me a coffee.

Flirting with new economic models

A few months back, I read Becky Chambers fantastic book A Psalm for the Wild-Built.

It's a story about belonging and finding your place in the world, and it's set in a world where everyone takes care of each other.

The main character is a monk who brews tea and listens to peoples troubles. In exchange, they pay them whatever they feel their service was worth, or whatever they can afford at the time.

This read was part of a broader exploration I've been doing on models beyond capitalism, and it got a lot of gears turning in my head.

If a Go Make Things Membership sounds a bit like the economic model I described in A Psalm for the Wild-Built, that was on purpose. It was a direct inspiration.

I shared a bit about this on BlueSky over the weekend, and have already been delighted by the response to it. I think people are sick of feeling fleeced for everything they've got, and long for a world where we're all a bit more kind and look out for each other.

As always, if you need anything or I can help you in any way, please reach out. I read every email I get!

Like this? A Go Make Things membership is the best way to support my work and help me create more free content.

Cheers,
Chris
