I'm writing from our home office... which currently feels like a life-size snow globe as giant flakes have been falling all morning. ❄️
James' half birthday cake is in the oven, and his requested spaghetti sauce with meatballs is simmering in the slow cooker, so the house smells amazing. I'm wearing multiple layers of everything, so I'm nice and toasty warm too.
January is a good month to stay inside, make cozy comfort foods, and declutter your unneeded items before spring arrives and you head outside.
Today, I'm sharing some of our favorite comfort foods, a few seasonal-specific decluttering projects, and an easy-to-remember plan to S.I.M.P.L.I.F.Y. your home and life this year and beyond!
Warm winter wishes to you, from snowy West Michigan! ☃️
simple food.
Oatmeal is one of my favorite comfort foods any time of year, but especially on cold winter mornings.
This delicious (make-ahead) baked oatmeal is so easy to whip up and it will keep you full all morning.
Seasonal organizing projects: As I mentioned above, January is a great time to declutter. Along with your medicine cabinet, here are a few more projects you could tackle this month:
holiday decorations (purge anything you didn't use)
gift cards (we get lots over the holidays and use these to organize them)
Take 20-30 minutes to work on one of these areas today!
My first scam: After 15+ years of buying and selling hundreds of items on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace, I was scammed for the very first time last week (it was only $20.) I'm not sharing for pity but rather to prove that buying and selling online isn't that risky (I get asked about this all the time). I firmly believe that most people are good. 🥰
Speaking of Good People: I participated in our local library's Winter Reading Program and received this book as my prize. The short stories about "Good People" are so lovely and heartfelt... they'll restore your faith in humanity and motivate you to be a better person.
I'm learning the Cello: I've wanted to play a string instrument since I was quite young, but my school didn't have an orchestra, and my mom was a band teacher... so I started playing the French Horn at age 10 and never looked back (I still play!) However, my desire to learn a string instrument hasn't lessened over the last 3 decades, so I bought a cello (on Marketplace)! I'm still terrible, but I can make beautiful sounds when I play a single open string.
