| The voice of the world in numbers | | Jan. 14, 2025 | | | Welcome to Front Page, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | | 1. Biden's Legacy | | The Data: President Joe Biden leaves office next week with Americans expecting history to judge his presidency more unfavorably than favorably. A slight majority of U.S. adults (54%) predict he will be remembered as a "below average" or "poor" president, while 19% expect him to be seen as "outstanding" or "above average." Rankings: Among recent U.S. presidents, Biden's expected historical review is comparable to Richard Nixon, who also has a significantly negative net rating. Full Story | 2. NATO Countries' Assessment of Biden's Leadership | | The Data: In the last year of Biden's presidency, median approval of U.S. leadership across 30 NATO member countries stood at 35%, the lowest of his term, and median disapproval was at 51%, the highest of his term. Better but Not Back: Under Biden, ratings of U.S. leadership among NATO allies didn't return to the high levels recorded when Barack Obama was president, but they were substantially higher than throughout Donald Trump's first term. Full Story | 3. Nurses Keep Top Ethics Rating | | The Data: Nurses consistently earn the highest ethics rating of various professions in the U.S. This year, 76% of Americans rate nurses' honesty and ethical standards as “very high” or “high,” while most of the rest consider them to be “average” rather than low. Other Professions: Other high-ranking professions include grade school teachers, military officers, pharmacists and medical doctors, all lauded for high ethics by majorities of Americans. The least well-respected, with majorities rating them as having “low” or “very low” standards, are lobbyists, members of Congress and TV reporters. Read More | 4. Americans' Growing Wariness Toward Alcohol | | The Data: Last year, 45% of Americans said drinking one or two alcoholic beverages per day is bad for one's health, while just 8% saw it as a healthy behavior. The Trend: Perceptions that drinking alcohol is harmful were steady (below 30%) from 2001 through 2018 before rising to 39% in 2023 and 45% in 2024. This trend will be updated in July as part of Gallup's annual Consumption Habits survey. Read Story | 5. Trump 2.0: New Term, New Expectations | | The Data: Americans' predictions for what President-elect Donald Trump will accomplish in the White House have changed somewhat from his first term. The biggest increase in expectations is seen in views that Trump will avoid war (up 17 percentage points since 2016), followed by the belief that he'll control illegal immigration (+9), reduce the crime rate (+8) and improve race relations (+6). On the Other Hand: Americans are less sure now than in 2016 that Trump will improve healthcare and education, with the optimistic percentages slipping 12 and 10 points, respectively, and that he will heal political divisions (-6).
