Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | | 1. VP Candidates Unknown to Nearly 1 in 5 Americans | | The Data: Slightly fewer than one in five Americans are unfamiliar with Democratic vice presidential candidate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (19%), and Republican vice presidential candidate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance (17%). Vance's unfavorable rating (47%) exceeds his favorable (36%), while Walz is equally liked and disliked (41% favorable, 40% unfavorable). Party Preferences: Both candidates enjoy strong support within their parties — 79% of Democrats view Walz favorably, and 74% of Republicans favor Vance. However, independents look a bit more favorably on Walz (37%) than Vance (30%). Latest Data | 2. Israelis, Palestinians Share Dim Outlook for Peace in Middle East | | The Data: In Gallup surveys conducted in July and August of this year, majorities of those living in Israel (66%) and in the West Bank and East Jerusalem (68%) said they do not think a permanent peace will ever be achieved. The Trend: Skepticism about peace has prevailed in these regions since Gallup first polled Israelis and Palestinians about this in 2006. After reaching a peak in 2023, it declined this year, but clear majorities never expect to see permanent peace. Election Environment Favorable to GOP | | The Data: Eight in 10 Gallup measures that have shown some relationship to past presidential election outcomes or that speak to current perceptions of the two major parties favor the Republican Party over the Democratic Party in the 2024 election. Key Measures: The Republican Party has key advantages in U.S. adults' party identification and leaning, in the belief that the GOP rather than the Democratic Party is better able to handle the most important problem facing the country, in Americans' dissatisfaction with the state of the nation, and in negative perceptions of the economy with a Democratic administration in office. Full Story | 5. Restaurant Ratings Fall | | The Data: Even as inflation has come down, easing the pinch on consumers' dining-out budget, the restaurant industry's positive ratings have fallen to 52%, a low only matched during the 2008 financial crisis. Industry Context: With broad declines across industries, farming is now the most highly regarded, while restaurants struggle to maintain majority-level positive ratings among Americans.
