| The voice of the world in numbers | | Oct. 29, 2024 | | | Welcome to Front Page, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | | 1. Rock the Vote(ing Laws) | | The Data: Most U.S. adults support election laws that require photo identification to vote (84%), require proof of citizenship when registering to vote for the first time (83%) and allow early voting (76%). Partisan Differences: Democrats broadly support early voting, sending absentee ballot applications to all voters, and automatic voter registration, while far fewer Republicans favor each. Republicans nearly unanimously back requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote and requiring photo identification when voting, but Democrats' support for each policy is about 30 points lower (though still at the majority level). Full Story | 2. Trust in Media Hits Rock Bottom | | Highest Trust: Majorities of U.S. adults express at least a fair amount of trust in their local government (67%), state government (55%) and the American people as a whole (54%). Lowest Trust: At 31%, the news media garners the least trust of 10 U.S. civic and political institutions involved in the democratic process. More express no trust at all in the media than say they have a great deal or fair amount. Read More | 3. Softening Job Market? | | The Data: Forty-four percent of U.S. adults say it is a good time to find a quality job, while 50% say it is a bad time. The Trend: Gallup measures Americans' views of the job market once per quarter. The latest reading, from October, is essentially unchanged from August but is lower than readings taken between August 2021 and April 2024. More on Economy | 4. Favorability Low for Both Trump and Harris | | The Data: About half of U.S. adults rate Donald Trump and Kamala Harris positively on Gallup's historical 10-point favorability scale. This puts them on the lower end of what Gallup has measured for presidential nominees dating back to 1956. Past Ratings: Historically, most presidential candidates have had positive ratings of 60% or higher, but that has become less common for nominees in the past 20 years. Full Story | 5. Christmas Spending Bill | | The Data: Gallup's preliminary reading on the 2024 holiday retail season, taken in October, finds Americans predicting they will spend an average of $1,014 on Christmas or other holiday gifts this year. The Trend: These spending intentions are up from $923 in 2023. Full Story | | | |
