The world is on fire. Not figuratively. Literally. We should be cutting back on electricity use as fast as we possibly can. Yes, we should also shift to renewable energy. But realistically, we cannot do that fast enough. We need degrowth, too. AI consumes comically large amounts of electricity. It requires far more energy to train, and far more energy to run, than traditional tools that do the same thing. And water. So much water. Big corporations that committed to reducing their energy use, like Microsoft, are seeing their consumption go up because they've instead decided to go all-in on these tools (to the point that they're planning to reopen a fucking nuclear power plant to offset it). Most AI tools are, frankly, shit. They make people work more slowly to generate worse code. They steal copyrighted works. They introduce a tremendous amount of legal liability. But even if that weren't true, I would fight AI with every fiber of my being. Because in a time of environmental collapse, AI tools in their current form are immoral. At a time when we should be focused on not just slowly the leak but repairing the ship, AI is blasting a new hole in the hull. Before you at me, all tech is political, and silence is political, too. Don't accept AI quietly. Don't go along with it just because it's easier not to fight it, or because you find it mildly (or extremely) helpful in some situations. Fight. Rage against the AI machine.
