| The voice of the world in numbers | | Oct. 22, 2024 | | | Welcome to Front Page, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | | 1. Deciding Factors for U.S. Voters | | The Highest: The economy is the sole issue that a majority of U.S. registered voters rate as having an “extremely important” influence on their choice for president, with “democracy in the U.S.” coming in second at 49%. The Lowest: Just two of the issues measured — climate change (50%) and transgender rights (38%) — are rated by less than a majority of voters as extremely or very important to their presidential vote choice. Full List | 2. Are You Better Off? | | The Data: A majority of U.S. adults (52%) say they are worse off now than they were four years ago, while 39% say they are better off and 9% volunteer they are about the same. Question History: In past election years when an incumbent has sought reelection, Americans have given mixed responses to Ronald Reagan's iconic 1980 debate question, "Are you better off today than you were four years ago?" While it has become a standard by which sitting presidents are judged, it's unclear how it reflects on vice presidents. Full Story | 3. Lost Trust in the Watchdog | | The Data: Trust in the U.S. media varies significantly among partisans. Currently, 54% of Democrats, 27% of independents and 12% of Republicans express a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media's ability to report the news fully, accurately and fairly. The Trend: Independents' trust in the media matches the record low in 2022, while Democrats' and Republicans' confidence in the media is statistically similar to each party's historical low point. Full Story | 4. Global Confidence in Elections | | The Data: Nearly half of the world's population has voted or is voting in major elections this year. In 2023, Gallup's annual global survey showed high confidence in the honesty of elections in places such as Norway and Finland, where more than 90% trusted the honesty of their country's elections. Residents of Mongolia and Bulgaria had the least faith. The U.S. ranked 72nd out of 127 countries and areas surveyed, with 44% of Americans expressing confidence in their process. Bulgaria Low: Ahead of their election on Sunday, few Bulgarians have confidence in the honesty of their elections (10%). In 2022 and 2023, Bulgaria reported the lowest trust of all countries surveyed worldwide. World Stories | 5. Democrats and Independents More Likely to Vote Early | | The Data: Forty-six percent of registered Democrats, 43% of independents and 31% of Republicans plan to vote before Election Day. The Trend: Partisan differences in early voting emerged in the 2020 election and continue today, with Democrats much more likely than Republicans to say they will vote early. This is in contrast to prior election years when the two party groups were equally likely to exercise this option, with independents slightly behind. Full Story | | | |
