Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | | 1. Got American Pride? | | The Data: This year, the percentage of U.S. adults who are “extremely proud” to be American is steady at 41%, near the low of 38% recorded in 2022. Together, those who feel extremely or “very proud” amounts to 67%. Political Divide: Republicans are uniquely patriotic, with 59% versus 36% of independents and 34% of Democrats reporting they are extremely proud to be American. Full Story | 2. As Americans Celebrate the Nation, Most Don't Like Its Direction | | The Data: Only about one in five Americans are satisfied with the direction of the U.S. (21%) in Gallup's latest measure in June. The Trend: Low levels of satisfaction aren't new. For over two decades, less than half of the public has been satisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. It hasn't reached the 30% mark since 2021 and — aside from a few measures collected just before the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic — has not reached the 40% mark since 2005. What the World Thinks of U.S. Leadership | | The Data: From surveys in over 130 countries and territories, the median global approval rating of U.S. leadership stood at 41% in 2023, below the 45% recorded during President Joe Biden's first year in office but unchanged from his second. Global Leadership Approval: The measure of leadership approval can highlight elements of influence and soft power that the U.S. has worldwide. Historically, from 2007 to 2023, global approval of U.S. leadership ranged from a high of 49% in 2009 to a low of 30% in 2017 and 2020. Full Report | 4. Americans Can Name That Patriotic Tune | | The Data: Six in 10 U.S. adults could correctly answer “The Star-Spangled Banner” when asked to name the national anthem in 2016. Americans' recall of this matched the reading in 1991 and was just shy of the 68% found in 1939. Meaning: National symbols such as the U.S. flag and rituals like celebrating July Fourth and saying the Pledge of Allegiance help bond Americans to their country and each other. But awareness of these symbols and rituals is not universal. Full Story | 5. Five Areas of National Progress | | The Data: Americans were slightly more satisfied with five aspects of the state of the nation this January than they were three years ago. These include two involving race relations, two aspects of government, and the nation's moral and ethical climate.
