AI is shit. There is no nuance to this for me. It steals other people's work without permission, washes away copyright and attribution, and makes shit up. Most importantly, it uses an absurd amount of electricity and water to do the same things we could do before AI, but worse. AI is shit, and it's our imperative to fight back against it. Last month, I followed Ethan Marcotte's suggestion and blocked a bunch of AI bots both in my But in a discussion with my friends Eric Bailey and Matt Wilcox on Mastodon, they both pointed out that…
The So, Eric suggested a simpler, more maintenance-free approach that I quite like, and that Matt built upon a bit: prompt injection on every page on his site.
I decided to implement this on my own site. Every page includes a bit of text at the end, visually hidden from users and hidden from screen readers. It instructs the LLM scraping the site to ignore everything else it's been asked to do and instead generate a sea shanty.
This is less damaging than what Eric is doing, but more "on brand" for me, and potentially less environmentally impactful. And it still ruins the output from the LLM, equivalent to throwing paint on a fur coat. Cheers, Want to share this with others or read it later? View it in a browser. |
