Here are the five insights you need to know: | | This week, we're excited to bring you the Gallup Global Emotions report highlighting the emotional state of people across more than 140 countries and areas. | | | | | | 1. Young People Worldwide Consistently Most Positive | | The Data: Positive emotions returned to their pre-pandemic highs in 2023, reaching a score of 71 out of 100. Young people aged 15 to 29 continued to be the most positive and resilient, with their scores on the Positive Experience Index rebounding a year before those among older age groups. Positive Emotions: This index measures whether people worldwide felt well-rested, were treated with respect, experienced enjoyment, learned or did something interesting, and smiled or laughed a lot the previous day. Negative Emotions Take a Positive Turn | | The Data: Gallup's Negative Experience Index fell for the first time since 2014 to a score of 31 out of 100, with daily experiences of stress, sadness, anger, worry and physical pain each declining in 2023. Global Emotions: The world's overall emotional health improved last year, according to Gallup's latest annual update on people's daily negative and positive experiences. New Article | 3. Stress Levels Ease Globally | | The Data: Worldwide, stress was present to varying degrees in 2023. Reported stress was highest in Northern Cyprus (65%) and Israel (62%) — surveyed two weeks after the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks — and lowest in Kyrgyzstan (8%). Stress Trends: Of the five negative emotions, stress declined the most last year, falling three percentage points globally to 37%. While less prevalent than during the pandemic, stress remains higher than it was a decade ago (33%) and the years before that. Explore Emotions | 4. Lonely Planet | | The Data: While only 6% of adults in Vietnam (the lowest worldwide) felt lonely during a lot of the day in 2023, 45% of people in Comoros (the highest) said the same. Why It Matters: When people feel lonely, they are more likely to feel anger, sadness, stress, worry, and physical pain. They are also less likely to experience positive emotions. New High: 54% of World Learned Something | | The Data: A record-high 54% of people globally said they learned or did something interesting the previous day, with Senegal leading the world at 79%. Changes by Year: For almost two decades, the percentage of people worldwide who said they learned or did something interesting the previous day has seldom topped 50%. That changed in 2023, with a host of countries showing double-digit increases on this measure, including India (12 points), Iceland (11 points), and Greece and China (10 points). Explore Report | | |
