There are no Google Helpful Content Update recoveries so far Despite the March 2024 core update, which partially incorporated the helpful content system, no sites have recovered from the September 2023 helpful content update so far. However, some sites have seen recoveries from previous core updates, as evidenced by data shared by Glenn Gabe on X (formerly Twitter). Deciphering INP and Core Web Vitals In this episode of Search Off the Record, John Mueller and Lizzi Sassman are joined by Rick Viscomi from the Chrome Web Performance team. They discuss the importance of understanding what users seek to accomplish and optimizing accordingly, rather than focusing solely on metric scores. Search Central Live 2024 in Warsaw, Poland Google is hosting a Search Central Live event in Warsaw, Poland on April 24, 2024. I have already applied. Have you? Google still has not announced a launch date for SGE Google has not yet announced an official launch date for its Search Generative Experience (SGE), although there are rumors that it may be unveiled during the Google I/O keynote address on May 14, 2024. It is likely that when SGE does launch, it will be implemented in a way that minimizes disruption to Google's search ad revenue, possibly by not displaying AI overviews for queries that typically show ads. Google tests AI overviews in search results for subset of U.S. users Google has begun testing AI-generated overview answers, part of its Search Generative Experience (SGE), in the main search results for a small percentage of U.S. users, even if they have not opted into the feature. The company is initially focusing on queries where generative AI can provide significant value, such as complex questions that require information from multiple web pages, and plans to expand the test to more users and regions over time. 6 ways to travel smarter this summer using Google tools Google is introducing new AI-powered tools to make summer travel easier, including generative AI in Search for trip planning, recommendation lists in Maps, and customizable travel lists. The company is also rolling out features like instant translations with Circle to Search on Android devices and Google Lens, as well as AI-powered multisearch in Lens to provide helpful insights about the world around you, acting as a personal tour guide. Get more personalized shopping options with these Google tools Google is introducing new personalized shopping features to help users find exactly what they're looking for, including style recommendations based on user ratings, the ability to see more from favorite brands, AI image generation for shopping, and virtual try-on tools. Interesting SEO cases from my day-to-day work as an SEO consultant I will now be sharing interesting SEO stories from my daily work. Here are the two latest ones. The story of a no-index tag that wasn't there... In a surprising SEO case, a huge e-commerce site's blog traffic dropped significantly due to a JavaScript redirect to an old, empty AMP version of the page containing a "noindex" tag, which effectively "transferred" the tag to all blog pages and caused Google to remove them from the index. >> Read the full story on LinkedIn << The curious case of the Core Update traffic drop An SEO investigation into a medium-sized e-commerce website's 20% traffic drop, seemingly caused by the March 2024 Core and Spam Updates, revealed that the site's removal from the Google Merchant Center on the same day, due to not directly selling products, was the actual culprit. >> Read the full story on LinkedIn << The Tool That Changed My SEO❗️ If you've followed me for a while, you've heard me ranting and raving about my all-time favorite tool – Cora. But I don't just talk about it because I'm an affiliate. I present it to you because it's completely changed the way I do SEO… And secretly, I want you to take advantage of this tool so you can stay ahead of the crowd and crush it as an SEO! Here is the introduction to the Cora SEO tool: >> See how Cora simplifies advanced SEO << Cool SEO tips this week And here are a few cool SEO tips shared recently. Over-focusing on links is likely a waste of time In case you were wondering (reported by Barry Schwartz), Google's John Mueller recently advised against over-focusing on links, suggesting that it's likely a waste of time. He emphasized that there are more important aspects to consider when improving your website's overall quality. John also pointed out that there is no objective way to count links on the web, as every tool collects its own data differently through crawling. Don't remove your contact and about pages Although Google's John Mueller confirmed that there is no explicit requirement in Google's search developer documentation for websites to have "Contact Us" or "About Us" pages, it's generally not advisable for SEOs to remove these pages from their sites. In most cases, users expect to be able to find information about the website and have a way to contact the site owners, making these pages important for user experience and trust. Interesting SEO resources this week Here are a few super interesting articles and other SEO resources you should check. Google's Helpful Content Update & ranking system: What happened and what changed in 2024? In this article, Lily Ray and Silvia Gituto discuss the impact of Google's Helpful Content Update and Ranking System on various websites and categories in 2024. They analyze the common patterns and trends among the most affected sites, such as excessive ads, affiliate links, lack of E-E-A-T, AI-generated content, and poor user experience, and provide insights on how Google's core ranking systems now assess content helpfulness. SGE snippet research: We analyzed 100K keywords to see Google's AI in action SE Ranking analyzed 100,000 keywords across 20 niches to study the impact of Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) and found that 64% of the analyzed keywords either have an SGE answer or a Generate button. The study revealed insights such as the average text length of SGE snippets (approximately 3,485 characters), the most common number of links in expanded SGE answers (8 links), and that 85.5% of SGE snippets link to domains from the top 10 organic results. The dos and don'ts of AI content creation I've just published a new highly sarcastic article where I share my dos and don'ts regarding AI content creation for SEO purposes. I'm doing my best to be calm and polite but I don't manage to be like that throughout the entire article. >> Check my article on AI content creation << 16 reasons why your page isn't ranking on Google Helen Pollitt discusses 16 possible reasons why a webpage may not be ranking well on Google, including technical issues, content quality, credibility factors, and algorithm updates, and emphasizes the importance of systematically investigating and addressing these issues to improve search rankings. 401 vs 403 status codes and their SEO consequences Yevheniia Khromova from SE Ranking explains the difference between 401 (Unauthorized) and 403 (Forbidden) HTTP status codes and their impact on SEO, while providing tips on monitoring and fixing these issues using various tools and methods. 5 reasons why rankings are lying and how to fix them Brad Smith discusses five reasons why seemingly decent rankings may not drive the desired SEO results. This includes the need for top 3-5 rankings, misalignment between content and searcher intent, keyword cannibalization, fierce competition, and the difficulty of acquiring high-quality referring domains, emphasizing the importance of addressing these issues to achieve long-term ROI. Uncovering link inversion and shifting signals in Google Search Console Glenn Gabe discusses how Google Search Console's Inbound Links report can reveal instances of "link inversion" or "shifting signals," where third-party URLs containing duplicate content are being canonicalized to a website's own URLs. He explains that while this can temporarily benefit a site's rankings and link signals, the canonical role can flip, causing the site to lose those signals and rankings, making it important for SEOs to understand and address this situation if it's occurring on their site. 27-year search expert shares 5 steps to boost your SEO Roger Montti discusses Duane Forrester's five tips for becoming a better SEO and anticipating consumer trends. These include dedicating time for daily research, following known experts, using official sources for guidance, exploring developer resources, and anticipating consumer trends by understanding how technology affects customer experiences and behavior. How to track rankings (the right way) Ever had a page climb to a great ranking position, only to see it plummet the next time you check? Most rank trackers give you a false sense of security. They only check your rankings once a day and miss the times they drop just hours after giving you the report. It's a slight reporting error, but it leads to confusion around how you're truly ranking for targeted keywords. If you want to see how I use the Cora Volatility Tool to claim stable, consistent rankings, I reveal the full process in this video: >> Watch how I use Cora to analyze my rankings. << Lawyer SEO guide (coming soon) 😱 If you're a lawyer or if you do SEO for lawyers, I've got a special announcement: My "Ultimate Guide To Lawyer SEO" is launching soon!
