Let's move on to the biggest and most recent developments in the SEO world… Reddit's deal with Google Google has entered into an expanded $60M partnership with Reddit. This will allow for greater integration of Reddit content across Google products by providing efficient access to Reddit's data and enhanced signals to better understand and utilize their content. Google: Don't punish us for our success in Search In a recent legal filing, Google claimed the U.S. government seeks to unfairly punish its success in search by trying to prop up lesser competitors. They argued that being the top search engine stems from its hard work and innovation that benefits consumers. Google also contends allegations around its Search Ads 360 platform are unfounded, stating it aligns with industry norms and that hampering the tool's development would actually hurt competition in search advertising. The trial addressing monopoly abuse accusations is nearing its end, with potential implications for Google's default search partnerships if found guilty. Google Analytics referral spam from Poland Many Google Analytics users have recently reported a sudden influx of fake referral traffic from Poland. This skewed analytics data and frustrated site owners who have limited options to filter out this likely referral spam attack. Google bug redirects clicks to spam sites Google seems to have a bug that hijacks search clicks for hotel listings in Europe to redirect users from legitimate sites like TripAdvisor and Booking.com to unrelated spammy sites instead of the expected destination. New structured data support for product listing variants Google has just announced a significant update that enhances how products with variations (size, color, material) appear in search results. Websites, especially e-commerce stores, can now give Google more details about their product variations, helping shoppers see the specific option they're looking for. Imagine how much that could increase clicks and sales! If you run an e-commerce store and you want to make the most of this change, learn how to structure your product data using the new ProductGroup schema type. Google released an article that shows you exactly how to do that. Google's making changes to how it handles canonicals Google updated its canonical documentation to clarify that rel=canonical links with hreflang, lang, media, or type attributes are not used for canonicalization, instead recommending proper alternate link tags for specifying alternate page versions. Google clarifies recovery time for Helpful Content Update Google clarified that while it's theoretically possible for sites to recover from the helpful content update within a few weeks by making significant improvements, typical recovery still takes several months to rebuild trust. In practice, no documented cases of sites rebounding that quickly have been seen over 5 months since the update launched. 3 reasons not to block GPTBot from crawling your site As Nikki Lam explains, there's much more to gain than lose by embracing GPTBot. - Allowing GPTBot access opens up visibility to ChatGPT's 100 million weekly users, enabling greater brand exposure, potential traffic and customers from recommendations, and positive digital PR.
- Embracing generative AI early allows you to get ahead on an emerging acquisition channel and "generative engine optimization" as a facet of SEO before competitors leave you behind.
- Contributing quality content to GPTBot's training data helps enhance the accuracy of AI systems overall, while OpenAI pledges to minimize harm via content filtering under their safety principles.
4 tips for removing unwanted images from Search To quickly remove images for emergency reasons, use Google's Removals tool, though the images may reappear once the request expires if you don't also block them through other methods. If you don't have access to the hosting site to remove images, try deleting them altogether from your own site to block them. Update your robots.txt file with wildcard patterns like "animal-picture-.jpg" to block categories of images, noting that "noimageindex" will only block embedded images on that page rather than globally, so consider using X-Robots-Tag instead for specific images. Check the full explanation on SEJ. How to use the Links report in GSC Google's John Mueller asked how SEOs utilize the link data in Google Search Console. Responses indicated SEOs use it to evaluate links by type, quality metrics, source location/language, attributes like nofollow, suspicious patterns, etc. This helps assess the overall link health and authority building. Specific use cases include: - Tracking suspicious links to clean up spam
- Monitoring internal links driving site crawl prioritization
- Merging with Majestic data for additional context on external links indexed by Google
- Understanding why strange URLs may be getting crawled
- Identifying issues that may need link disavows or removals
- Seeing spikes in links to detect potential manipulation attempts
The data has limitations (e.g. only a snapshot) so some combine it with other tools. But overall it provides insight into how Google assesses and handles links to a site. Introducing How Search Works -
How Google Search Crawls Pages They're great starting points for anyone getting a feel for the basics of SEO. Some cool resources, from some cool SEOs. Below are a few of the most valuable, and most recent, resources from the other SEO leaders in our industry… How to speed up site migrations with AI Mark Williams-Cook explains that AI-powered tools can significantly speed up the manual process of painstaking redirect mapping for site migrations. Rather than teams needing to spend days combing through thousands of URLs, advanced models can accurately match content pairs across domains in minutes which humans can then rapidly validate instead of having to map manually. I love website migrations, so I strongly recommend you check my guides on that too: Does Google favor low-quality content from big brands? 🤔 The answer isn't a simple yes or no. If people click on bigger brands, not because of their content, but because they trust the brand, this can give those big players an advantage in the SERPs. So… Is high-quality content from sites like ours primed to lose against the low-quality content from bigger brands? Here's what Roger Montti thinks... On this topic, HouseFresh, a smaller review website… Published an article claiming that Google's algorithm favors big brands with fake or misleading reviews. They showed examples of products receiving great reviews on large websites, even though those products turned out to be low-quality. HouseFresh believes this bias is harming independent review websites. See how Google's SearchLiaison responded to this accusation. Marie Haynes on Google's algorithm bias to big brands Marie Haynes gives her thoughts on why it seems like a few select brands dominate the search engines and have an advantage over smaller sites. I'll give you a hint: She believes Google's AI, Gemini, will play a major part in quickly identifying truly useful pieces of content… Regardless of brand. See her full breakdown of what's happening here... Experience is a key factor during Google algo updates An analysis of 50 sites found those demonstrating first-hand expertise via unique content and clear contact information tended to see gains, while excessive ads and missing logos correlated with losers. Should you forget about PageRank? Kaspar Szymanski - an ex-Googler - believes PageRank isn't as important as it used to be. His new article outlines why focusing on other SEO factors is now crucial for sustainable results. Rather than an ineffective focus on manipulating PageRank via risky link building, sustainable SEO should prioritize directly improving organic rankings through performance optimizations, brand building, crawl budget management, ensuring technical consistency, and demonstrating unique value to users. The e-commerce product page SEO GPT validator and sheet checklist Aleyda Solis just released a game-changing tool for e-commerce SEO! The tool is powered by GPT to analyze your product pages and compare them against your top competitors. It pinpoints exactly where your pages might be falling short and how to write Google-approved product descriptions. It runs on the OpenAI website… Where ChatGPT also runs. Explore the tool and see if it's worth it for you. Quick note: This is an extension, meaning you need to have ChatGPT PLUS to use it. Did you like this issue of the SEO newsletter?
