But can it run Doom? π
As more game developers are starting to build their own virtual titles housed within other games, such as Minecraft and Roblox, it seems that the trend has transcended into the crypto gaming landscape as well.
A pseudonymous AI game developer, going by the handle of Dav, has recreated the environments within Diablo 3 in Nifty Island, an NFT game that just entered open beta last week.
Using Nifty Island's readily available tools and stock images, Dav has painstakingly taken more than 20 hours to recreate all 5 acts of the popular RPG on his island.
Additionally, visitors can expect several mini-games on Dav's Diablo-themed island, including an island-wide footrace, a Capture-the-Flag game in the town square, and a Spy Hunt game.
However, Dav stresses that the project aims to emulate the vibe of Diablo rather than outright copying it by using fan-created assets rather than Blizzard's 3D assets.
With more players joining Nifty Island's play-to-airdrop campaign, one can only imagine the level of creativity that's floating around, with new and unique islands popping up more frequently.
We've already seen DOOM on the Dogecoin network, so who's to say that it won't appear on an in-game island?
Editor's Take:
With more sandbox platforms popping up, recreating established IPs in another virtual setting can be a tricky bridge to cross, especially with copyrights being a long-standing issue in the gaming industry. However, it's also allowed builders to develop the types of games that fans want using characters that they know and love (albeit at risk of DMCA takedown requests and copyright lawsuits).
