U.S. Cargo and Passenger Airlines Gained 4,516 Jobs in October 2023; Employment Remains 8.8% Above Pre-Pandemic October 2019 Monday, December 11, 2023 BTS 56-23
U.S. Airline Total Number of Employees (both Full-Time and Part-Time) U.S. airline industry (passenger and cargo airlines combined) employment increased to 812,381 workers in October 2023, 4,516 (0.56%) more workers than in September 2023 (807,865) and 65,835 (8.82%) more than in pre-pandemic October 2019 (746,546). U.S. scheduled-service passenger airlines employed 535,385 workers in October 2023 or 66% of the industry-wide total. Passenger airlines added 2,147 employees in October 2023 for a thirtieth consecutive month of job growth dating back to May 2021. United Air Lines led scheduled passenger carriers, adding 603 employees; Delta Airlines added 596, and Southwest added 488. U.S. cargo airlines employed 272,240 workers in October 2023, 34% of the industry total. Cargo carriers gained 2,370 employees in October. FedEx, the leading air cargo employer, increased employment by 2,505 jobs.
Scheduled passenger airlines add 2,301 full-time equivalents in October 2023 for 30th consecutive month of job growth
U.S. Airline Full-Time Equivalents (FTEs) BTS calculates FTEs by dividing the number of part-time employees by 2 and adding that figure to the number of full-time employees. The October 2023 industry-wide numbers include 698,719 full-time and 113,662 part-time workers for a total of 755,550 FTEs, an increase from September of 4,040 FTEs (0.54%). October 2023's total number of FTEs remains just 9.85% above pre-pandemic October 2019's 687,826 FTEs. The 26 U.S. scheduled passenger airlines reporting data for October 2023 employed 508,638 FTEs, 2,301 FTEs (0.45%) more than in September 2023. October 2023's total number of scheduled passenger airline FTEs is 56,286 FTEs (12.44%) above pre-pandemic October 2019. Data by passenger carrier category can be found in the accompanying tables. U.S. cargo airlines employed 242,271 FTEs in October 2023, up 1,740 FTEs (0.72%) from September 2023. U.S. cargo airlines have increased FTEs by 11,013 (4.76%) since pre-pandemic October 2019.
Reporting Notes
Passenger, cargo, and charter airlines that operate at least one aircraft that has more than 60 seats or the capacity to carry a payload of passengers, cargo, and fuel weighing more than 18,000 pounds must report monthly employment statistics. Regulations require U.S. airlines to report employment numbers for employees who worked or received pay for any part of the pay period(s) ending nearest the 15th day of the month.
