Welcome to Front Page, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week:

1. From Moscow, With Love … for Beijing

Line Chart: 71% of Russians approve of the job Chinese leaders are doing in 2023.

As the war in Ukraine drags on, we find that Russians are not feeling the economic pinch of sanctions, but they are feeling an increasing affinity for China's leadership. While some metrics — such as their satisfaction with living standards and ability to afford food — show evidence of some strain, Russians have never felt safer or more satisfied with the freedom they have in their lives.

2. The Christmas Shopping Crunch

Bar Chart: 42% of Americans plan to do some of their holiday shopping in December.

The holiday season is often filled with joyous opportunities to see family, enjoy the winter weather and do a bit of shopping. Line Chart: Americans estimate they will spend roughly $975 on holiday gifts in 2023.

This is also the highest estimate of holiday gift spending that we've recorded in any November reading dating back to 1999.

In our latest research on U.S. opinion of the Middle East conflict, we find that Americans are nearly split on whether they approve or disapprove of the military action Israel has taken in the Gaza Strip over the past several weeks. But those topline stats mask significant variance among key subgroups across the U.S. Who is most and least supportive of those actions? Explore the differences here.

5. Quiet Quitting in Southeast Asia

Donut Chart: 68% of workers in Southeast Asia are not engaged, and 6% are actively disengaged.

Taking a deeper look into employee engagement in Southeast Asia, we find that the percentage of quiet quitters in the region (workers who are not engaged) is nine percentage points higher than the global average. Today, nearly seven in 10 workers across the region are doing the bare minimum of what's expected of them at work and are psychologically disconnected from their employers. But what's most fascinating is that these workers are more likely, not less, to be stressed and experience burnout than their engaged colleagues.
