Welcome to Front Page, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week:

1. Law and Order!

Bar Chart: Countries where people felt most and least safe in 2022.

In our annual Global Law and Order report, we reveal how safe people worldwide say they feel where they live, as well as their confidence in the institutions they rely on to keep them so. Confidence in police in 2022 was the lowest across Latin America, while sub-Saharan Africa scored the lowest of any region on the Law and Order Index overall. But it's hard to generalize across over 140 countries — look up how your country ranked.

2. Too Soon for Politics?

Line Chart: 32% of Americans follow news about national politics very closely in 2023.

The 2024 U.S. presidential election is just a year away, and Republican debates are underway. If you were to assume Americans are increasingly tuning in to political news, you'd be jumping the gun. Our latest update on Americans' news attention shows that a modest 32% are following the news about national politics "very closely." But if the past is prologue, that rate will tick up eight to 10 percentage points by next year.

3. Too Much Government

Line Chart: 54% of Americans say the government is doing too much in 2023.

Americans remain committed to their skepticism of big government after a brief pandemic interlude. When it comes to views that the government is doing too much — or, more specifically, too many things better handled by citizens and the private sector — a majority of Americans say it is. This marks the third time a majority has held that view since a record-high 54% wanted the government to do more in 2020.

4. Too Much Work

Bar Chart: 58% of U.S. employees have been asked to take on additional responsibilities recently.

As the U.S. labor market continues its unique moment of offering more work than there are workers to tackle it, over half of employees say their employer is asking them to do more. In fact, 58% say that their boss has asked them to take on additional responsibilities in the past three months. But here's the curve ball: Nearly half also say they have seen organizational or team restructuring where they work, adding to the stress of heavier workloads.

5. The State of Loneliness

World Map: Countries where 75% or more of residents feel connected to others.

In our latest collaboration with Meta, we explore the state of social connections across the globe. About seven in 10 people worldwide describe themselves as "very" or "fairly" connected to others. At the same time, nearly one in four (24%) consider themselves "very" or "fairly" lonely. Six percent of people don't feel connected to anyone — which translates into roughly 287 million people. One quote from this year's report sums up the importance of human connection for us all: "Simply put, people need people." Check out the report here.
