How to Lead With Your No. 1 Strength and Build Trust

CliftonStrengths Domain grid with a white gradient overlay

Your leadership style comes through in everything you do, whether you notice or not. Leadership is a way of working, a way that you show up for others. It is service-oriented and requires you to be at your best. But before you can lead others, you must know how to lead yourself — and the best place to start is with your strengths. Whatever your individual strengths may be, you can use them to help build trust with colleagues, followers and loved ones.

Think about a previous group project. What role did you play in the group, and what did you contribute? If you felt strongly about the best path forward, how did you express that to other group members? How did you convince someone to try your approach? Was it easy or difficult to gain their trust? Building trust takes time and consistency, and identifying the trust-building behaviors that come naturally to you can give you clues about your strengths.

Look to Your Strengths to Minimize Burnout

Collage of Prevent and Overcome Burnout: A Strengths-Based Guide

The majority of the working world is experiencing burnout — only 24% of workers report they "rarely" or "never" feel burned out at work.

Given burnout's prevalence, Gallup asked more than 3,000 employees in our CliftonStrengths database how they help themselves feel more productive when they are overwhelmed with or frustrated by their job.

Naturally, people had different strategies for coping with burnout — often very consistent with each individual's dominant strengths.

What's worth noting is that the most common coping strategies were not always effective, even though some employees preferred them.
