Welcome to The Week in Charts, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | 1. Crisis at the Border | | Did you know there is still a major crisis at the southern border of the U.S.? It's amazing how the public's focus fades in and out on the massive challenge the U.S. has had for generations concerning migrants who cross its southern border illegally. Yet, neither side of the aisle's leaders seem to have a grip on the problem or the ability to deliver a clear, cohesive message to the 46 million people across Latin America who desire to migrate to the U.S. Read Article | | 2. Safety in Ecuador | | Ecuador is among the countries where many people are feeling forced to migrate. Most concerning is the relative collapse in perceptions of safety in the nation. Organized crime and the drug trade have taken their toll not only on local safety but also on Ecuadorian confidence in the local police and judicial system. Read Article | | 3. What About the Rest of the World? | | We also find that when taking a more global view, the desire to migrate to the U.S. has declined over the past decade. This coincides with a time when the global desire to migrate in general is at its highest point in 10 years, with 16% worldwide — which translates into nearly 900 million people — saying they would like to leave their country permanently. What was once perhaps looked down upon as clique-ish or disinviting is turning out to be one of the most important factors in retaining talent on a team. Workers who say they have a bestie at work are twice as likely to recommend their company as a great place to work — a lifeline in this still upside-down employment market. Read Article | | 5. Dr. King's Legacy | | No, you're not getting this a week late — it's actually the perfect time to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King and the movement for racial equity in America. In fact, millions of Americans, including three out of four Black Americans, say they still worry a great deal about race relations in America. This is an important metric to keep in mind as the MLK holiday gets further behind us. | | And that's The Week in Charts! Mohamed Younis Editor-in-Chief Gallup A forward is the best compliment.
