Welcome to The Week in Charts, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week: | 1. Are You a Splitter or a Blender? | | With the post-pandemic workplace chaos, several paradigm shifts are emerging in how we think about life and work. Our latest research explores the distinction between those who like to blend life and work within their day versus those who prefer to check in and check out … completely. Fascinating to me was the generational comparison highlighting a relative proclivity among older millennials for mixing work and play. Read Article | | 2. Africa and the U.S.: It's Complicated | | Last week, African heads of state met with POTUS at a summit geared to strengthen U.S. ties with the continent. But the elephant (perhaps dragon) in the room was the role China has played in infrastructure and other investments made over the past decades. Approval ratings of the U.S. and China have been mostly neck-and-neck in recent years, but the U.S. has maintained an edge over China in most years. | | 3. America's Biggest Problem | | In a year when Americans have lived through a watershed decision from SCOTUS on abortion, serious inflation, a chaotic stock market and so much more, the issue mentioned most often by Americans as the nation's top problem is the government. Our yearly average of the monthly figures shows that dissatisfaction with government edges out all individual economic mentions, as well as various domestic controversies, in our Most Important Problem list for 2022. Read Article | | 4. Crisis in Peru | | Supporters of ousted Peruvian President Pedro Castillo are demanding an early election to replace the interim president and Congress. President Dina Boluarte gave in to demands last week and is proposing an election in April 2024. But will this be soon enough to satisfy protesters as a nationwide state of emergency takes effect? Confidence in the honesty of elections in Peru has been low for years — most recently, fewer than one in four (24%) had confidence in the honesty in their elections. A contentious contest could get dangerous. | | 5. Life in Gaza | | With the holiday season approaching, we wanted to share a sneak peek at new data from the Holy Land. In our latest findings from the Palestinian Territories, Gazans continue to fare significantly worse than their Palestinian counterparts in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Whether it's how they rate their standard of living or their hope for the future, citizens in the Gaza Strip are living a different reality than other Palestinians. | | And that's The Week in Charts!
