The Federal Reserve in a Slump | | As the Fed blazes along with interest rate hikes aimed at battling inflation, the institution is taking an image hit. Our annual September look at public ratings of federal agencies finds 37% of Americans saying the central bank is doing an "excellent" or "good" job. That's a seven-point drop from last year when the economy was in a very different weather pattern than it is today. Read Article | | 2. The FBI's Image Rebound | | Widespread coverage of Mar-a-Lago, top secret documents and raids on a former president's home study have put the FBI in national headlines. But the publicity hasn't been harmful; to the contrary, the FBI saw an uptick in its "excellent"/"good" job rating from Americans, climbing six points over the past year to 50%. The bureau's rating features the largest partisan gap of any agency rating this year, with most Democrats (79%) versus 29% of Republicans giving the agency high marks. Read Article | | 3. Does America Need a Third Party? | | As they typically do, the majority of Americans (56%) think their country needs a third major political party. The rate has dropped from a record-high 62% in 2021. But support for the concept has held steady among independents at a whopping 75%. With Democrats in charge in D.C., Republicans nationwide are more likely than Democrats to want a third party to emerge, but the rate is particularly high among moderate/liberal Republicans (60%).
