Welcome to The Week in Charts, where we break down Gallup's latest insights on our constantly evolving world. Here are the five insights you shouldn't miss this week:

1. Americans' Wellbeing Plummets

Line Chart: 53.2% of American adults are thriving as of February 2022.

Amid soaring inflation and coming off the omicron COVID-19 surge in January, Americans' life evaluations in February hit a 13-month low. Independents' wellbeing took the biggest hit, with thriving rates among them dropping steeply since June 2021. Daily stress and worry remained steady and near pre-pandemic levels.

2. Afghans' Suffering Reaches World High

Line Chart: 94% of Afghans rate their lives poorly enough to be considered suffering.

Suffering in Afghanistan has reached a global high we have not captured previously in more than 15 years of polling the world. The survey, conducted as the U.S. withdrew troops and the Taliban took over the country, found 94% of Afghans rating their current and future lives poorly enough to be considered suffering.

3. Ball Hogs on Your Team?

Bar Chart: 22% of employees and 30% of leaders strongly agree that people close to the action in their company are trusted to make decisions.

4. Americans' Worry About the Environment Holds Strong

Line Chart: 44% of Americans worry a great deal about the quality of the environment in 2022.

As the United Nations gives a failing grade to the global community on protecting the environment, our annual Environment poll marks the seventh straight year of high worry among Americans over the state of Mother Nature. More than four in 10 tell us they personally worry a great deal about the environment. We also found that experiencing a severe weather event renders one more likely to be worried about global warming, and this is true among both party groups. We gave CNN a sneak peek as they focused in on extreme drought in America's Western region.
