New on the Blog: 5 Tips to finally let go of "what-if-I-need-it clutter" After 3 years of faithfully grinding my own grain and baking with 100% whole grain flours, I've had more than a few feelings of frustration as I scroll through pictures of "perfect" baked goods on one of my favorite whole grain blogs. As you can imagine, I was shocked when this blogger recently admitted to baking the food for her blog photos with all-purpose flour (not freshly ground whole grain) because "those are the pictures people share and pin". Sigh... all this time, I've been wondering what I'm doing wrong because my whole grain baked goods didn't rise as high or look as perfect as hers, even though I was following her recipes -- when in reality, SHE'S not even following her own recipes! It really struck me how "branded" the big blogs are becoming. We're not following a friend or a person anymore, we're following their brand... and brands require "perfection" in order to draw readers and bring in more ad dollars. Moral of the Story: Don't compare yourself to what you read/see/watch online! Chances are her house isn't always that clean, her family isn't always that happy, her life isn't always that effortless, and her baked goods aren't always that fluffy! 😂 Simple Food. One of the biggest roadblocks to decluttering our homes and spaces is our thought process. Specifically, those pesky thoughts that cause us to hesitate before discarding an item we haven't used in years... simply because we MIGHT need it again someday. I just signed up for a 7-week class through a local organization... which reminded me of my archived post about ways to be a lifelong learner. If you love the idea of learning but have no desire to go back to school (or you work full time or are home with young children) I encourage you to think outside the box and try some of my suggestions. Keep reading --> 10 ways to be a lifelong learner. In other news... I created Simon's yearly photo book on Saturday! I use the same templates year after year, so it only takes one afternoon to do the entire book. Then I wait for a discount code to purchase. I explain more about our digital photo books in this archived post. We had a few beautiful days last week (sunny and 60's!) so Clara and I washed the cars, vacuumed the cars, cleaned out the "pool house", organized the garage, and even power-washed the garage floor. It's been 9 years since we got our epoxy garage floor coating and it still looks brand new! Dave and James are our basketball junkies... so thanks to "March Madness" our TV sees more action in March than the other 11 months combined. If you're wondering how we watch TV even though we haven't had cable in years, this post explains more (and just like everything else, the price has gone up since I first shared my post 5 years ago!) Nora joined a girl's running club at school and they'll be running a local 5K race next month. I hope she enjoys running as it's something she can do for her entire life... not just a few years in high school! That's all for this week... enjoy the first week of Spring, and let me know if you successfully let go of any pesky what-if-I-need-it-clutter! ~Andrea p.s. In case you missed it last week, I wanted to mention that I'm reading Jennie Allen's newest book Find Your People and listening to the corresponding podcast "book club". The idea is to go through the book with a small group of local people... so if you're local and would like to join me and a few others going through this book, email me! |
